NFL Betting Online: The Kansas City Chiefs could be in a three-way race for the AFC West, but whether through a division crown or a wild card berth, the oddsmakers expect them to return to the postseason. The Chiefs went 11-5 last season and made it to the playoffs via wild card. They are listed as -150 favorites to make a successful return and are listed at +120 to miss in NFL odds.
The Chiefs started the 2015 season incredibly slowly, winning the season opener before dropping five straight games. Most thought Kansas City’s playoff hopes were shot, but it was an impressive turnaround as the Chiefs reeled off 10 consecutive victories to make the playoffs. The Chiefs blasted the Texans, 30-0, in the AFC wild card round but then lost to the New England Patriots by a touchdown in the divisional round.
The Chiefs averaged 25.3 points per game, which was ninth in the NFL, and repeating that would give the team a great chance at returning to the postseason. Quarterback Alex Smith threw for 3,486 yards with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 498 rushing yards and two scores. After using wide receivers very little in 2014, the addition of Jeremy Maclin was a big one, as he compiled 87 catches for 1,088 yards and eight touchdowns. Tight end Travis Kelce had a nice season in 2015, catching 72 passes for 875 yards and five scores. The Chiefs were a top-10 offense despite losing star running back Jamaaal Charles after only five games to a torn ACL. Charles is back in 2016 and a dynamic ball-carrier when healthy, so that should give the group a nice boost.
The defense was third in the NFL a year ago by allowing 17.9 points per game. Justin Houston, Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson make up one of the finest linebacker trios in the NFL, and safety Eric Berry is a Pro Bowler in the secondary. Cornerback Sean Smith left in free agency, which was a considerable blow, but Marcus Peters had eight interceptions a year ago and will aim to establish himself as a lockdown corner. The defense returns most of its key pieces and should be very good once again.
The Denver Broncos could be worse than last season while the Oakland Raiders should be better, so the race for AFC West supremacy should be interesting. The Chiefs’ combination of an elite defense and a solid offense bodes well for their chances. Even if the team doesn’t win the division, another wild card berth can be picked up, which is why Kansas City is favored to return to the playoffs in 2016 in NFL odds.
