NFL Odds - Lions Odds To Win Super Bowl 52

The Detroit Lions are still looking for their first postseason win in more than a quarter-century. Detroit has made the postseason in three of the last four seasons, but has been unable to get out of the Wild Card Round. A lot of that is due to Green Bay’s dominance of the division as the Lions haven’t won a division title since 1993.

Key Factors For Winning the Super Bowl

Beating the Odds – Detroit is one of the prime candidates for regression in 2017. The Lions were incredibly fortunate to end up in the postseason last year after finishing with a negative point differential. Football Outsiders ranked the Lions 27th in DVOA last season and Detroit will have a much tougher schedule this year. While much was made of the fact that Matt Stafford led this team to an NFL record eight fourth-quarter comebacks, it also highlights how this team could have finished with a much worse record. Detroit only won one game by more than a touchdown last season and that’s not normal for a playoff team.

Ameer Abdullah Staying Healthy – Abdullah was sidelined for almost all of 2016 after injuring his foot in the second game of the season. Recovering from a foot injury is always tough for a running back, but Abdullah’s specific injury is especially worrisome. He tore his Lisfranc and recovering from that is typically very hit or miss. It was a shame, because was very effective in the team’s season opening win against the Colts and was starting to look like the back he was at Nebraska. Without him, the Lions struggled to have a competent ground game all year and the team’s leading rusher finished the season with just 357 yards.

Better Play From the Offensive Line – Last season, Detroit’s offensive line was one of the worst in the NFL. The unit allowed running backs to be stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage on 13.4 percent of their carries and allowed Stafford to be sacked 37 times. Improving the offensive line was a priority in the offseason so the Lions opened up the pocketbook to sign two players that should be impact starters. Right tackle Ricky Wagner is now the league’s highest paid player at his position after four solid seasons in Baltimore. The Lions also made themselves better and a division rival worse by signing right guard TJ Lang from the Packers. Now the hope is that left tackle Taylor Decker can return quickly from shoulder surgery in June.

An Immediate Impact From First-Round Pick Jarrad Davis – Detroit’s linebackers were virtually nonexistent last season. No linebacker registered a sack, picked off a pass, or forced a fumble and the lack of a playmaker really hurt this team against better offenses. Davis was great during his first three seasons at the University of Florida, but his senior season was cut short after a leg injury. His tape was good enough for the Lions to use a first-round pick on him though. Davis’ numbers don’t jump off the page, but he earned a starting role as a true freshman and that’s hard to do for a defense as good as Florida’s. He should instantly become the team’s best linebacker.
