NFL Odds - New York Jets Quarterback Battle Odds

The New York Jets are in rebuild mode, so anyone taking them to win the Super Bowl will be parting with that money. However, there are still several interesting ways to wager on New York. There are the traditional spreads for each game, but there is also a look at the quarterback situation.

Ryan Fitzpatrick was the starting signal-caller a season ago but he struggled mightily and was not brought back. The Jets signed another veteran, Josh McCown, who may be used in his spot. The Jets would love for one of their young quarterbacks to step up and grab the reins but they aren’t just going to hand the job over early on to a player that doesn’t deserve it.

If the Jets struggle this season it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the young quarterbacks start some games later on. However, New York is still hoping to be surprisingly competitive this season and will go with the best choice to begin the year. There are three options which they are choosing from in 2017.

Josh McCown -105
Christian Hackenberg +105
Bryce Petty +1800

Josh McCown – McCown looks to be the favorite in this three-way battle. At 38, he has more than a decade of experience on both Hackenberg and Petty.

And, while his body of work in the NFL is not the most impressive, it’s more than either of his competitors can produce. The journeyman has a record of 18-42 in his 15-year career and has gone just 2-20 in the last three seasons, but that was as the quarterback in some bad situations. McCown is clearly not an upper-tier starter and he will be among the worst at the position if he gets the job.

Even so, he is a smart player who can do a decent job of avoiding turnover and is a good leader for a young group. The Jets don’t necessarily want McCown to win the job, but he may have to be the guy if the others don’t step up.

Christian Hackenberg – Hackenberg was drafted in the second round out of Penn State in the 2016 draft. The 22-year-old was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2013 and threw for 8,318 yards and 48 touchdowns in three years as the starter for Nittany Lions.

He served as the Jets’ fourth-string quarterback last season and only saw preseason exposure, completing 17-of-47 passes for 159 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, including a pick-six. Some believed the choice of Hackenberg so early was a reach in the draft.

The Jets would love to prove the critics wrong, and if Hackenberg can succeed right away it would certainly change the perception of this team. However, while he has shown nice progress in training camp, it’s still got a ways to go. Watch to see how Hackenberg does in the preseason. If he plays well, there is a chance he can overtake McCown for the starting gig to begin the year.

Bryce Petty – Petty saw limited time last season, coming in for the injured Ryan Fitzpatrick at the end of the season before eventually going down to injury himself. In that stretch, Petty appeared in six games for the Jets, completing 75-of-133 passes for 809 yards and two touchdowns with seven interceptions. Petty is also a recent draft pick of the Jets, but Hackenberg is the more recent one and was taken higher.

If Petty set the world on fire during his debut, he would have better odds winning this job. However, with Hackenberg and McCown both in the fold, he will really need to outplay both of them throughout the preseason to get consideration. Petty is the longshot in this competition as the starter is much more likely to be McCown, with Hackenberg the darkhorse in the race.
