The mass majority of the time, the NFL MVP award is given to the league's best quarterback. Last year wasn't an exception when Cam Newton won the award, and he's a relatively heavy favorite to repeat that honor in 2016.

The fact of the matter is that there are really only a few guys who have a legitimate shot to win the MVP award this year. Newton is surely chief amongst them, but at a price of 5 to 1, we definitely can find better value on the board than that on a team which has to come down at least a little bit from its 15-1 season from a year ago. The media which votes on the honor also isn't going to look kindly upon the charade which Newton pulled at the end of the Super Bowl last year when he basically acted petulant and avoided talking at all costs. Unless he's truly the obvious choice, we doubt he wins the award again.
What's left in our eyes are Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger and Russell Wilson, and we really don't think there's anyone else in the league who can take the honor. Tom Brady would be an obvious choice as well, but sitting out for four games thanks to Deflategate is going to be a killer to his chances, especially if the team plays well without him for the first month of the year.
Rodgers threw for 3,821 yards and 31 TDs last year on a team which underachieved badly offensively. With Jordy Nelson back from his torn ACL, the Packers should be much better offensively, and Rodgers should again be a threat to throw for 40 scores and 4,000 yards.
Big Ben is always the most important player on the Steelers. He gets dinged up all the time and sits out as little as possible, and he runs an offense which is predicated on him being able to take big time shots down the field to his speedy wide receivers. His numbers can be incredibly gaudy, and the Steelers are always in playoff contention.
Wilson would be our third choice of the bunch, but he's a lot like Newton from the standpoint that he relies a lot upon the players around him to make him better, not necessarily the other way around. Wilson has the legs to get out and run for 100 yards in a game if he has to, but he's a heady quarterback who rarely makes mistakes. More important is the fact that Wilson is a proven winner, and he's surely going to get this Seattle team back to the playoffs this year. That, in and of itself, makes him a qualifier to win the MVP honor.
What you shouldn't be doing is going with the rogue choices like Adrian Peterson or J.J. Watt. Watt has had a couple of the best seasons defensive players have ever had, and he still hasn't even come close to winning the award. Peterson actually did win the award in 2012, but do you think he's running for over 2,000 yards again? The chances are slim for sure.
