NFL Odds - Odds to win the MVP award

Let's look at some raw facts here regarding the MVP award.

The only running backs to win MVP since 2000 were LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006, Shawn Alexander in 2005 and Adrian Peterson in 2012. In the case of Tomlinson, he scored 31 touchdowns, an NFL-record 28 of which came on the ground. Alexander rushed for 27 TDs the year prior. In the case of Peterson, he rushed for over 2,000 yards. In that span, a 2,000-yard rusher was not awarded the MVP as well when Chris Johnson did so in 2009. DeMarco Murray rushed for 1,845 yards last year for the Cowboys and wasn't even considered for the award.

The last defensive player to win the honor was Lawrence Taylor in 1986. If J.J. Watt didn't win the MVP last season after picking up 20.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, five recovered fumbles, one interception and a total of five touchdowns, three of which came while playing offense, it isn't going to happen this year either.

To date, there's never been a wide receiver win the MVP, a stunning statistic considering the fact that a kicker, Mark Moseley won the award in 1982.

So let's immediately rule out all non-quarterbacks here, no matter how valuable they might be to your fantasy football team.

In fact, just go back and look at who has won the MVP award since 2003. Manning, Manning, Brady, Manning, Manning, Brady, Rodgers, Manning and Rodgers along with the three running backs we mentioned before.

Brady and Manning are at the ends of their careers now, and it's tough to see how either is going to ultimately win the MVP award, especially with many in the media believing that Brady is guilty of cheating without getting any punishment for his role in "Deflategate."

In our eyes, that leaves three men and three men only who can win the MVP.

Ben Roethlisberger is a bit of a dark horse in our eyes. He's going to throw for at least 4,000 yards this season, and throwing for 50 touchdowns isn't out of the question either with a bad defense playing on the other side of the field. If Pittsburgh wins this season, it is going to be because of Big Ben.

Our more favorite plays though, are the two favorites, Andrew Luck and Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers won his second MVP award last year, and he is going to be more likely to win it again this season now that Jordy Nelson is out for the year with a torn ACL. If the Packers are going to win in 2015 – and we suspect they still will in spite of the fact that Nelson won't be playing – it'll be Rodgers who has to do the damage.

Luck is the next up and coming star, though. He threw for 4,761 yards and 40 TDs last season, and there's a good chance he does that again this year. In fact, with Andre Johnson now on the outside with T.Y. Hilton, Luck has his best compilation of talent around him he has ever had. Even 50 touchdown passes isn't out of the question either.
