NFL odds - Offensive issues once again expected to hamper Los Angeles Rams’ hope at playoff berth

NFL Betting Online: The Los Angeles Rams traded up to secure the No. 1 overall pick in the draft and chose Jared Goff. He may be the team’s quarterback of the future, but it’s hard to believe he can come in and excel right away. The Rams’ offense has been poor the past several years and Goff’s inexperience could mean more of the same in 2016. Los Angeles plays in a tough division alongside the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals, meaning a wild card berth is the most likely path to the postseason. The Rams are not expected to get there this year as they are listed at +300 to qualify and -400 to miss out on the playoffs in NFL odds.

The Rams were 29th in the NFL in scoring a season ago, which resulted in a 7-9 record despite a defense that was impressive. Once again the issue was quarterback play. Nick Foles threw for 2,052 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions before being replaced by Case Keenum, who was a little better, throwing or 828 yards with four touchdowns and a pick. That’s why the team traded up to grab Goff, and he is likely to start either immediately or early in the season. The star of the offense is second-year running back Todd Gurley. Even coming off a torn ACL last season, Gurley rushed for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns in only 13 games. The receiving core leaves something to be desired, as Tavon Austin leads a group that needs to improve.

The Rams finished near .500 despite the unimpressive offense in 2015 because of a talented group on defense. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald was one of the best interior defensive linemen in football, registering 69 tackles and 11 sacks, and is poised for another big year. Robert Quinn wasn’t as effective as usual but is another key piece on the line. The Rams secondary took a hit this offseason when cornerback Janoris Jenkins and safety Rodney McLeod signed elsewhere, but Trumaine Johnson and T.J. McDonald still highlight a group that could be pretty good. Mark Barron led the team in tackles last season after he was moved from safety to linebacker and will.

The Rams are in the same place as they have been for the past few years. The defense is rock solid behind an imposing defensive line, but passing game issues limit the ceiling of the team. The Rams could be good in future seasons with a core led by Donald on defense and Goff and Gurley on offense, but this season isn’t expected to result in a playoff berth in NFL odds.
