It’s been over decade since the Washington Redskins last won a playoff game and a heck of a lot longer since they played in a Super Bowl. And despite all the turmoil surrounding the organization this offseason, Jay Gruden has a good chance of putting a challenging team together. The Skins won the NFC East two years ago and were in the running for a playoff spot until the end of last season. The organization underwent drastic changes in the front office and on the field, but Gruden has molded Kirk Cousins into a top-notch quarterback and will milk one more season from him before he likely moves on.

Key Factors For Winning the Super Bowl
Going Out In a Blaze of Glory – This is likely Cousins’ last season in Washington and he has a chance to prove how valuable he is. Cousins threw for nearly 5,000 yards last season with 25 touchdowns while completing 67 percent of his throws. He led the Redskins to the second-most prolific passing offense while placing third in total offense in 2016. Still, the offensive coaching staff was rebuilt with Matt Cavanaugh taking over as coordinator, Kevin O’Connell as quarterbacks coach and Gruden calling plays. The offense is also without its two leading receivers from last year with DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, who each had over 1,000 receiving yards, leaving town. Cousins put up huge numbers while playing every game over the last two seasons, but the Skins were barely over a .500 team. A big season in the win column would mean more cash in the buckets that await Cousins next summer.
Will Somebody Catch a Damn Ball – As mentioned above the Skins lost their top two receivers who accounted for 135 receptions and 2,046 yards between them. Washington pilfered Terrelle Pryor from Cleveland in free agency with hopes that being in an offense that can actually move the football will benefit him. Pryor made the transition from college quarterback and was a bright spot for the Browns last season with 77 receptions for 1,007 yards and four scores. He’s a big target at 6-4 and will also help in the red zone, where the Skins had problems last season. A healthy Josh Doctson will also soften the blow of losing Jackson and Garcon. Doctson, the Skins’ first round pick in 2016, was shut down for the year after two games and two receptions. The tight ends are a big part of the offense and Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis are two good ones. Offensive success in Washington is predicated on the passing game and the new pieces have to come together to make that part work.
Put the D Together – While the offense was picking up chunks of yards when it was on the field, the defense was allowing just as many during its time. The final record was almost to be expected. The Skins surrendered 380 yards per game and couldn’t get off the field. The failure eventually led to a change in the coaching staff with Greg Manusky taking over as coordinator. The Skins could have as many as five new starters on defense with linemen Terrell McClain, Stacy McGee and Jonathan Allen all fighting for spots. Second round pick Ryan Anderson is a promising edge rusher and free agent signee Zack Brown was a Pro Bowler last year. They could be starting linebackers.
