2015 SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS SEASON REVIEW

It was a rough year for the Niners in 2015. Virtually every expert expected the team to take a step back after Jim Harbaugh left for the college ranks, but the Niners collapsed last season. Colin Kaepernick regressed majorly without Harbaugh to call the shots and provide encouragement and Jacksonville cast-off Blaine Gabbert ended the year as the starter. The team also suffered a blow when Carlos Hyde only participated in seven games all season due to injuries.

The defense wasn’t bad at all for the Niners last season and probably would have put together a lot better numbers if it wasn’t hamstrung by an ineffective offense. NaVorro Bowman had a fantastic season after returning from injury and was named First Team All-Pro as a result. Eric Reid looked effective in the back end as well, while Jaquiski Tartt lived up to his reputation in college as one of the biggest hitters there is.

KEY LOSSES

At this point, it looks unlikely that Anquan Boldin will be back to San Francisco in 2016. Although the veteran receiver hasn’t signed somewhere else, Chip Kelly looks like he wants to go in a different direction. Boldin led the team in receptions, yards, and receiving touchdowns last season and brought a veteran presence to a young receiver corps that will be missed.

KEY ADDITIONS

The biggest thing that San Francisco did this offseason was re-sign some of its key players from last season. Michael Wilhoite will be back for 2016 as well as Ian Williams and these two have been solid contributors on the defensive side of the ball.

Through the draft, the 49ers looked to have gotten better along the lines with two of their first round picks. DeForest Buckner was a monster at Oregon and his height and length matched with his explosiveness gives him an extremely high ceiling if he can put it together. San Francisco also added some help to the offensive line with Joshua Garnett, who is another in a long line of solid Stanford interior linemen.

2016 SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS SEASON PREVIEW

San Francisco will be picked to finish last in its division by most prognosticators. The 49ers just don’t have the guns to match up with powerhouses like Arizona or Seattle and even St. Louis looks further along than the Niners do at this point.

There are some bright spots on this team though. San Francisco should be better on offense with Chip Kelly calling the shots and he could harness Kaepernick’s potential like Jim Harbaugh did. Kelly likes a mobile quarterback that can make things happen with his feet and Kaepernick is the best running quarterback in the league.

Provided Bowman stays healthy and continues to play well, the defense should be a good unit in 2016. Most of last season’s starters return and the defense shouldn’t be as exposed as it was last year thanks to a floundering offense. If the secondary can make strides, this should be a unit that is in the top half of the league.

In a weaker division, San Francisco might make some noise as a dark horse, but the NFC West is just too tough. The 49ers will likely be better than last season and will get the benefit of a last-place schedule to make things easier, but eight wins is the absolute best case scenario for San Francisco and that won’t be enough to get into the playoffs.
