2015 SEATTLE SEAHAWKS SEASON REVIEW
Seattle had a rough start to the season and for the longest time didn’t look like it would be able to make the postseason. The Seahawks were upset by St. Louis in overtime in Week 1 and although the rest of their early losses looked more understandable by season’s end, Seattle was 4-5 and its playoff hopes looked very much in doubt. However, Seattle responded in a big way by winning six of its last seven down the stretch to make the postseason and then almost pulled off an amazing come from behind win after being down by 31 to Carolina in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
With Thomas Rawls and Marshawn Lynch both having their seasons derailed with injuries, it was Russell Wilson who took his game to another level in leading Seattle to the playoffs. Long accused of being just a game manager, Wilson shined and completed over 68 percent of his passes for over 400 yards with a 34-8 touchdown to interception ratio. It was by far the best season of his career and erased any doubt that he was a franchise quarterback.
KEY LOSSES
Marshawn Lynch announced his retirement in the offseason after being banged up for much of last season. There have been veiled hints at him possibly coming back at some point and he may just want to limit the hits on his body, but at this point, Seattle expects to be without him in 2016.
Russell Wilson has had Russell Okung protecting his blindside throughout his time in Seattle, but Okung left for Denver in the offseason and Seattle has a massive hole to fill. Okung was a mainstay at left tackle and although he wasn’t one of the at the position he was solid.
Seattle had a big loss on the defensive side of the ball as well. Bruce Irvin left to sign a big money contract with Oakland and his skillset will be missed. He was often asked to play a role that limited his stats and didn’t look great on paper, but was an integral part of what the Seahawks tried to do.
KEY ADDITIONS
Germain Ifedi was probably the biggest addition for the Seahawks in the offseason. Seattle’s offensive line is in disarray and adding Ifedi with its first-round pick should stabilize the right guard position at least. Ifedi was a mauler at Texas A and M and has the potential to be great early on.
2016 SEATTLE SEAHAWKS SEASON PREVIEW
This will probably be Russell Wilson’s toughest test yet. The offensive line is ranked by Pro Football Focus as the worst in the league at this point and without Lynch to carry the load, the offense is reliant on Wilson and Rawls. The good news is that Doug Baldwin emerged as a threat last season after years of average production. Baldwin signed a long-term deal in the offseason that should keep in Seattle until the end of the decade and he will be Wilson’s main target.
Defensively, Seattle should be as dominant as it has been in recent years. The team is strong all around with Michael Bennett playing like one of the best defensive linemen in the league last season and a solid set of linebackers highlighted by Cliff Avril and Bobby Wagner. The strength of the defense is again the league’s best secondary. Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas, and Richard Sherman all made the Pro Bowl last season and the Legion of Boom is set to bring back the pain with the return of big hitter Brandon Browner.
Seattle is going to have some ups and downs on offense, but barring lots of injuries should be a lock to return to the postseason.
