According to Pro Football Focus, the best roster in football belongs to the Seahawks, who came up one play short of winning back-to-back Super Bowls, and that had more to do with a questionable play call than any sort of roster weakness.
The Seahawks made a big splash trading for former New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham. An elite offensive talent, he gives quarterback Russell Wilson a true top target and should make life easier in the red zone for the Seahawks offense that already features the best running back in football in Marshawn Lynch.
The downside to the Graham trade, however, was that the Seahawks gave away their best offensive lineman in center Max Unger. His departure further weakens a line that has allowed far too much pressure on Wilson and remains below average at best.
But Wilson, Lynch, and now Graham gives the Seahawks weapons perfectly suited to make up for any blocking issues. Lynch broke 130 tackles last season, including the playoffs, while no other back got near 100.
With the addition of Graham the Seahawks should be better offensively even with their deficiencies on the O-Line, but this team is built around defense and the Legion of Boom.
Seattle’s front seven continues to be impressive, with all but one of their starters rated at least above average by PFF. They can get after you from the edge with Cliff Avril, from the interior with Michael Bennett in sub-packages, and added a few talented rookies in Frank Clark and Obum Gwacham.
The secondary remains strong with elite talents Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas, and there are plenty of quality players all over the defensive side of the ball. Free agent pickup Cary Williams, much maligned in Philadelphia, could have a good year in a defense that puts better talent around him and supports his aggressive play.
The Seahawks are faced with some personnel issues that could potentially derail their season. Wilson and linebacker Bobby Wagner, two of the most prominent players on the squad, are entering the final year of their deals and nothing has been accomplished as far as extensions for either one. That’s something the team needs to deal with.
KEY ADDITIONS: TE Jimmy Graham, CB Cary Williams, CB Will Blackmon.
KEY LOSSES: C Max Unger, LB Malcolm Smith, TE Zach Miller, CB Byron Maxwell, OG James Carpenter.
Wilson and the offense could be vastly improved if the offensive line comes together but the Legion of Boom took the Seahawks to consecutive Super Bowls and the group is as good if not better. That’s why Seattle is favored to get to Santa Clara for Super Bowl 50 ( +235 ) and win it ( +425 ).
