NFL Betting Online: The Dallas Cowboys had hopes of returning to the playoffs in 2015 and making a Super Bowl run. It all fell apart because of injuries to quarterback Tony Romo and wide receiver Dez Bryant, and Dallas finished a very disappointing 4-12. However, with the return to health of those two stars along with the addition of first round draft pick Ezekiel Elliott, the Cowboys’ goals have once again been set high. The oddsmakers agree, as Dallas is a -140 favorite to make the playoffs this year. Missing the postseason will pay out +110 in NFL wagering.
The Cowboys started the season 2-0 before Romo suffered an injury, and the bottom fell out from there. Dallas then lost seven consecutive games to drop out of playoff contention. The offense was awful, as a normally-high-powered attack finished the season averaging only 17.2 points per game, which was the second-worst mark in the NFL. The Cowboys couldn’t find a competent backup quarterback, cycling through Matt Cassel, Kellen Moore and Brandon Weeden. Darren McFadden surpassed 1,000 yards rushing and averaged 4.6 yards per carry, but the Cowboys still wanted to upgrade so they picked up Ohio State star running back Ezekiel Elliott. Dallas has the best offensive line in the NFL and Elliott should star immediately even as a rookie. Dez Bryant had only 401 yards receiving and three touchdowns a season ago in nine games, as he battled injuries and also wasn’t very effective when on the field. Despite that, Bryant has star-level talent and is expected to bounce back nicely in 2016.
The defense is the cause for concern. The Cowboys were in the middle of the pack defensively a season ago but were subpar for a few years before that. Dallas’ star middle linebacker Rolando McClain has been suspended 10 games and defensive end Greg Hardy wasn’t re-signed so there are some holes. Byron Jones is a player who should continue to improve, but there aren’t a bunch of playmakers on the defensive side of the ball.
Even with that shortcoming, the Cowboys’ offense should be among the NFL’s best. As long as Romo stays healthy, the team should be able to get right back into the playoff mix. The NFC East isn’t strong, so Dallas should have a solid shot at capturing it. A quick turnaround is expected after last year’s four-win campaign as the Dallas Cowboys are favored to win the playoffs in NFL wagering.
