NFL Week 13 Odds - Philadelphia Eagles at New England Patriots Game Preview

2015-Eagles-at-Patriots-Betting-Lines

As long as Tom Brady is quarterbacking, it really doesn’t matter who he throws the football to.

The Patriots look to respond after their first loss of the season and have a pretty good chance at home against the struggling Eagles. Brady just doesn’t like to lose, and it doesn’t happen often. He’s 40-8 in games following a defeat over his career.

ODDS ANALYSIS

The total spiked a point and the Pats could reach 49 by themselves. But I expect the Eagles to play a little better than they did the previous two games. However, they just aren’t in the same class as the Patriots, who are pissed after losing for the first time last week.

KEY INJURIES

Sam Bradford – The Eagles got waxed in two games their quarterback missed with a concussion and shoulder injury. Bradford returned to practice this week and said he expects to play, but Mark Sanchez would get the call again if any unforeseen issues arise before kickoff.

Rob Gronkowski – Suffered a minor right knee strain last week and is expected to miss a few weeks. Scott Chandler replaced Gronkowski and had a season-high five catches. He’s expected to have a bigger workload moving forward.

Dont’a Hightower – Is week-to-week after suffering a sprained MCL against Denver last week. The Pats are expecting to have linebacker Jamie Collins back after he missed the Denver game with an illness and he’ll slide into Hightower’s spot if he’s able.

KEY MISMATCH

Personnel can only slow the Patriots to a certain extent. New England will be without Gronk for this game and Julian Edelman remains sidelined with a foot injury. But Tom Brady continues maddening pass rushers with his ability to read and fillet a defense. The Pats are able to move the chains effectively on the ground without a home run threat in the backfield, which sets up Brady for deep shots to whoever is healthy enough to run underneath his long passes. With a league-high 28 touchdowns, Brady could be directing most of his passes toward Eagles rookie cornerback Eric Rowe, who will get the start with Nolan Carroll out. Rowe didn’t have much success on Thanksgiving Day against Calvin Johnson, who burned him for a pair of touchdowns. The Pats could get the trusted hands of Danny Amendola back in the lineup and Chandler looks like a Gronk clone.

KEY STAT

34.4 – Philadelphia’s third-down conversion rate. The Eagles are 27th, which is a big reason why they haven’t done much offensively. They attack New England’s defense which allows opponent’s to convert on third down just 38.1 percent of the time.

BETTING ANGLE

Eagles’ linebacker Connor Barwin offered an interesting theory about playing the Pats. After allowing 90 points, 10 touchdown passes and nearly 1,000 yards in two games, the only question seems to be, how bad will this get. But Barwin thinks that playing against Brady, Bill Belichick and Patriots may be a good thing, saying it will help get the team back to paying attention to the details. While facing Brady may light a fire under the Eagles defense, that hasn’t been the result when they’ve played against some other elite quarterbacks over the past couple seasons. The Eagles need a strong defensive performance in order to have a chance against the Pats. Over the last two weeks, they haven’t come close as Jameis Winston and Matthew Stafford carved them up. Maybe the challenge of playing Brady will get the Eagles fired up. If not, things could get ugly.

ANALYSIS AND ODDS PREDICTION

Even a motivated Patriots squad seems unlikely to blow out the Eagles simply because of their injury situation. Though Philly has appeared to quit on coach Chip Kelly, as witnessed by their back-to-back embarrassments to non-lethal teams, the carrot is dangling from the stick right in front of them. Nobody wants to win the NFC Least title and the Eagles, despite their recent woes, are just a game behind New York and Washington. New England might have enough in the way of reinforcements with Amendola and Collins likely back and they have the best quarterback in the business. The Eagles were torched by lesser slingers Winston and Stafford the past two weeks and Brady could, and probably will, pad his MVP stat sheet. Given how bad the Eagles have played and how close the Pats came to extending their unbeaten run with a shorthanded roster, it’s hard to go against Brady and Co. at home.
