NFL Week 14 Odds - Tennessee Titans at New York Jets Game Preview

Titans-at-Jets-Dec10

Ending an 11-game home losing streak and coming from behind in dramatic fashion last week could be what propels the Titans to a season-ending run that lifts the interim tag from coach Mike Mularkey. Or it could just be a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tennessee looks to build off that game and end New York’s three-game win streak while crippling the Jets playoff chances.

ODDS ANALYSIS

The Jets have been a boon for over bettors lately, evidenced by six of their last eight games going over the final total. The Titans got a home win last week but have been far from a safe bet on the road. Tennessee is just 2-7 ATS in its last nine roadies. There’s been little movement on the line and total.

KEY INJURIES

Kendall Wright – Was held out of practice this week after his ribs started bothering him. He was hurt on a catch in last week’s win over Jacksonville. The Titans’ second-leading receiver would likely be replaced by Dorial Green-Beckham in the lineup.

Darrelle Revis – Missed the past two games with a concussion and remains in the league’s protocol for such injuries, making his status questionable for Sunday. His replacement at cornerback in the Jets secondary, Marcus Williams, was held out of practice while he recovers from a knee injury.

KEY MISMATCH

Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brandon Marshall have found peace in New York. The two have combined to play on nine different teams in 10 years and none of them managed to reach the playoffs. They’re getting closer to changing that with the Jets, who are tied atop the AFC wild card race. The quarterback-receiver combination is at the center of that push. Fitzpatrick has tossed 22 touchdowns, two shy of his career-best, and Marshall has grabbed a team-high 10 of them, including six in the last five games. He’s topped 1,000 yards for the eighth time in 10 seasons and his 83 catches put him on pace to reach the century mark for the sixth time. They connected on 12 passes last week, including a 27-yard touchdown with 27 seconds left that forced overtime. Fitzpatrick threw for 390 yards and two scores on 36 of 50 passing while Marshall logged 131 yards for a second straight game. The Titans made Blake Bortles look like Dan Marino last week, surrendering 322 yards and five touchdown passes to the Jags’ second-year quarterback.

KEY STAT

39.0 – Tennessee’s quarterback sacks allowed. The Titans have given up the second-most sacks in the NFL and face a Jets defense that has registered 17 sacks in the last five games and 28 for the year.

BETTING ANGLE

Titans coach Mike Mularkey saw something he liked in Marcus Mariota last week, and it went far beyond the rookie quarterback’s 87-yard touchdown run that helped Tennessee snap an 11-game home losing skid. After surrendering the lead late, it looked like another fourth-quarter collapse would be in the works for the Titans, who have lost four games this season in which they had a fourth-quarter lead. Mularkey noticed Mariota’s demeanor on the sideline before going out for the game-winning drive. It was a look that said ‘don’t worry about it coach. We’re good.’ Mariota said that it was simply a matter of the Titans regrouping when they needed to. Mularkey saw a little more than that, and said it’s something that can be a confidence builder for a struggling team needing a rallying point.

ANALYSIS AND ODDS PREDICTION

All of Tennessee’s big offensive games have come against some of the worst defenses in the NFL. The Titans dropped a season-high 42 last week on Jacksonville. They also lit up New Orleans, Indianapolis and Tampa Bay. Not the cream of the crop at preventing points. This week is a little different. The Jets have the top run defense and are sixth in total defense. They will make Mariota beat them through the air. And while he is more than capable, especially against a secondary that will be without Revis, it is still a monumental task. New York is in the playoff hunt and veterans Fitzpatrick and Marshall, who have never played in the postseason, are performing like they want to be there. New York is too athletic defensively to let Mariota scramble around and if they keep him in the pocket the pass rush will make him dizzy. Revis may be out and Antonio Cromartie hurting, but if Mariota doesn’t have time to take advantage of their absence, it just won’t matter. Surprisingly, the Titans have been as much as a seven-point dog just once and they won outright at New Orleans. A majority of their games have been close so it would be wise to stick with Tennessee and the points.
