The first week of the NFL season was a painful one for injuries for a lot of teams. BookMaker primes you for the second Sunday of the season by going over all of the main woes which could play a huge role for bettors.
MCCOY'S STATUS SHADY
The Bills got bad news on Thursday when LeSean McCoy tweaked his hamstring. Rex Ryan has said all of the right things and is planning on McCoy playing, but this is still a very fluid situation which needs to be monitored. The Bills are going to need to keep the clock running against the Patriots by milking the ground game if they want any chance to win, and after releasing Anthony Dixon on Tuesday, that essentially leaves just Karlos Williams, a rookie out of Florida State, to tote the rock if McCoy can't play.
QUOTH THE RAVENS: INJURED MORE
The Ravens might have the most injury problems to deal with after Week 1. They were already playing without Dennis Pitta and Matt Elam, both of which were put on IR before the start of the season, and rookie Breshad Perriman developed a knee problem in the preseason which has kept him off of the field, but now, there are a lot more problems, too.
Terrell Suggs' season is finished after he tore his Achilles against the Broncos last week. Timmy Jernigan, another feared member of that front seven, has a knee injury which is leaving him marked as questionable for this game. Eugene Monroe has yet to pass concussion protocol as of Thursday, making him a serious question mark for this one, and reserve running back Lorenzo Taliaferro is up in the air with a knee problem, too.
There's only one fortunate thing for Baltimore on the injury front coming into this week…
DRIVING THE CARR
Derek Carr suffered a thumb injury on his throwing hand last week against the Bengals, and there was immediate speculation that he might not be able to play this weekend against the Ravens. However, all accounts suggest that Carr will indeed play.
Our concern, though? How well is a second-year quarterback without an established wide receiver going to get through a game against a ferocious pass rushing defense with a bum thumb on his throwing hand? Carr might play, but his presence on the injury report is surely going to be an issue come Sunday.
HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM
The Texans were awful in Week 1 against Kansas City, but the hope was that help was going to be on the way in the form of Arian Foster. Foster, of course, is still out with a groin injury, and though he was back at practice on Thursday, he probably isn't going to be on the field in this one.
The bigger concern for the Texans though, might be Duane Brown. Brown has a cast on his thumb, and though he is still technically listed as probable on the injury report, the fact that Houston has been searching for new offensive linemen to bring into camp this week tells us that the team's best offensive lineman very well could be on the mend.
Add in the fact that Ryan Mallett is going to be starting under center in place of the ineffective Brian Hoyer, and that's a boatload of changes for the Texans offensively.
WEEK 1 CASUALTIES OUT OF THE LINEUP
-The Redskins will be without DeSean Jackson for at least four weeks with a hamstring injury.
-The Titans lost Delanie Walker to a wrist injury which will likely keep him out this week.
-The 49ers probably won't have Reggie Bush on Sunday thanks to a calf injury.
-The Chargers will be without Ladarius Green if he doesn't pass concussion protocol by Sunday. Remember that San Diego is without Antonio Gates as well for the next few weeks for violation of the league's substance abuse policy.
-The Jets will be without Antonio Cromartie with a sprained knee.
-The Colts have lost T.Y. Hilton indefinitely after he suffered a knee injury in Week 1.
-The Cowboys won't have the services of either Randy Gregory or Dez Bryant for the next month or so thanks to ankle and foot injuries respectively.
-The Browns are likely going to have to start Johnny Manziel at quarterback after Josh McCown suffered a concussion in the second quarter of last week's game against the Jets.
-The Cardinals now know that Andre Ellington is out for at least two weeks with a sprained knee suffered at the end of last week's game versus New Orleans.
