NFL Week 5 Odds Report, Line Movement

Week-5-Odds-Movement-Odds9

The discrepancy between sharp and square plays is usually apparent in the NFL, but in Week 5 of the season, that gap is incredibly large and is causing some major line movements in some of these games.

Bills vs. Titans, Sunday 1:00 p.m. ET
Opening NFL Odds: Bills -4
Current NFL Odds: Bills -2.5

That's a heck of a line move against a team which has 75 percent of the betting action on its side. It's easy to side with the Bills in this game. They are coming off of a bad showing against the Giants and should be a better team than that, and Rex Ryan is playing against a rookie quarterback, a trend which has proven to pay off for bettors for years. Marcus Mariota has largely been looked upon as more lucky than good in his first few NFL games, and many suspect that his poor offensive line is going to get him into a lot of trouble against Mario Williams and an aggressive front seven. However, there's more to this than that. Maybe Buffalo just isn't that good. Maybe Tennessee is a lot better than 1-2 suggests. Maybe Mariota really is the real deal. That's a lot of maybes that sharp bettors are buying into, and that's why all of a sudden, the really big money has been invested in the hosts as short dogs.

Bears vs. Chiefs, Sunday 1:00 p.m. ET

Opening NFL Odds: Over/Under 46.5
Current NFL Odds: Over/Under 45

Jay Cutler and Alex Smith never were and never will be considered top-flight NFL quarterbacks, and that's the short answer as to why the total has come down in this game. The longer answer involves a lack of playmakers on both sides, knowing that Jeremy Maclin is really the only explosive wide receiver either team has, and he is being badly utilized in Andy Reid's offense. That longer answer also features two offensive lines which are brutal. Turnovers could be plentiful. It's a little scary that the Chiefs got in the red zone seven times last week against Cincinnati, as we know that if that turns out to be the case against the Bears on Sunday, there will be a lot more than 21 points on the board, but the odds of this K.C. offense managing 450+ yards and seven trips deep inside enemy territory again are small.

Rams vs. Packers, Sunday 1:00 p.m. ET

Opening NFL Odds: Packers -10.5
Current NFL Odds: Packers -8.5

The Rams pulled off a big upset on the road last week against Arizona, and the likelihood of them doing that in two straight weeks with this trip to Green Bay are slim. However, this is still a lot of points to be giving a team with a great defense. We all saw what happened last week when Aaron Rodgers was pressured by the San Fran offensive line. The end result was just 17 points. The Rams have the best defensive line in the league, and the suddenly somewhat beleaguered Green Bay offensive line could be in some trouble. That's why the Rams are definitively sharp, knowing that over half the bets have been on the Pack at that hefty price in spite of the line drop.

Broncos vs. Raiders, Sunday 1:00 p.m. ET

Opening NFL Odds: Broncos -5.5
Current NFL Odds: Broncos -4.5

This one really isn't about the line movement being notable as it is just how sharp the Raiders really are. Oakland quietly can really make itself a playoff contender with this win, and the Black Hole is sure to be rocking. The Broncos have been very fortunate through four games this season, and they could just as easily be 1-3 as they are 4-0. Oakland will come to play in this game in what could be the announcement of the arrival of Derek Carr as an elite quarterback. Sharp bettors are banking on Denver finally falling apart.
