With the Redskins not seeming to have enough talent to get the job done and the Cowboys still trying to figure out how to get Tony Romo and Dez Bryant healthy, the NFC East has turned into a crapshoot. The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants will both feel like they can stake a claim to the division crown, but the loser of this one is going to have an uphill climb for sure.
WHEN THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES HAVE THE BALL
Will the real Sam Bradford please stand up? You see an 83.7 quarterback rating, a 63.2 percent completion percentage and an 8/6 TD/INT ratio and think you've got an average quarterback on your hands. However, go back and watch that tape from last week's game against the Saints. If those two picks he threw into the end zone turn up as touchdowns, all of a sudden, we're talking about a guy who has completed almost 70 percent of his passes in his last two games and has seven touchdowns in that span.
The best sign for the Eagles is that DeMarco Murray has really started to get going. He's splitting the backfield with Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles, but last week, he had 120 total yards from scrimmage and a touchdown.
The Giants haven't had a clutch defense at all in recent weeks, most notably allowing the 49ers to march down the field and score the go-ahead touchdown against them with less than two minutes to play, so live bettors could certainly have some opportunities.
WHEN THE NEW YORK GIANTS HAVE THE BALL
The Eagles are having a miserable time right now trying to get off the field on third downs. Opponents are 12-of-23 on third down and five or more yards to go, and astoundingly high number for any defense. Furthermore, last week alone, the team gave up seven plays of at least 20 yards, five of which came on third and long situations.
However, the Giants have a real problem on their hands. We're really not sure how healthy or not Odell Beckham Jr. is. ODB isn't on the injury list to start the week, but he was clearly hobbling around at the end of last week's game against San Fran and was merely used as a decoy more than anything else for the final drive.
Remember that Rueben Randle and Victor Cruz are both still hurt, so if Beckham is limited, the Giants' wide receivers are a total mess. The only man in the passing game who hurt the Niners so badly last week down the stretch was Shane Vereen. If there's a team which should be able to figure out how to slow down the pass out of the backfield to the running back, it's Philadelphia, a team which uses its rushers as receivers time and time again.
TREND TO TRACK
How in the heck are we supposed to figure out who the real Eagles are? The sky was falling after losses to Atlanta and Dallas to kick off the regular season, but a win over the Jets seemed to get the oddsmakers turned back around. Now all of a sudden, a game which felt like Philadelphia would be a dog in a couple weeks ago sees it favored by a point and a half more than home field advantage.
So what are live bettors to do? For starters, they should certainly remember that Chip Kelly is 3-1 SU and ATS against the Giants in his career, and in three of those four games, the Eagles have put up at least 27 points.
