Preseason Week 2 NFL Odds - Miami Dolphins at Dallas Cowboys Game Preview

A broken ankle to backup quarterback Kellen Moore has Dallas Cowboys fans in a state of panic, but Dak Prescott is aiming to ease those fears. The rookie draft pick looked fantastic in his preseason debut and another showing or two like that should have Dallas feeling better about its signal-caller situation behind star Tony Romo. Prescott’s next chance to impress will come against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2 of the preseason slate.

This Week 2 preseason matchup will be held on Friday, August 19th, 2016, at 8 p.m. ET at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Odds Analysis

The Cowboys are the home team and have more talent on the roster, so it’s understandable why they are the slight favorites. Even though Romo may not play much, if at all, the first-team offense is talented and could put up some points before they head to the sidelines for the rest of the night. The Dolphins have a new coach in Adam Gase, and while he is a smart play-caller, it could take time for the team to master his offense.

Quarterback Rotation

Tony Romo didn’t play in the opener for the Cowboys and it’s unknown how many snaps he will take against the Dolphins. Romo is an established veteran with a long injury history, so it makes sense for him to get limited work in the preseason in order to be fully healthy for the regular season.

Dak Prescott started the opener against the Rams and finished 10-of-12 for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Prescott didn’t look like a rookie in the game and should see ample playing time throughout the preseason. The Cowboys’ third quarterback, Jameill Showers, finished 8-of-16 for 99 yards in his debut against the Rams.

The Dolphins’ starter is Ryan Tannehill. He didn’t do much in the first game, completing 2-of-4 passes in a 27-10 win over the New York Giants. Backup Matt Moore did the heavy lifting as he was 10-of-14 for 122 yards and a touchdown with an interception.

Zac Dysert was 1-of-2 for 16 yards and a touchdown, while Brandon Doughty finished 7-of-9 for 66 yards. Miami will likely roll out the same group for the second game, although Tannehill could play a bit more as he looks for a rhythm as the regular season gets closer.

Coaching History

Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is 8-14 in the preseason in his career. Garrett was decent early in his career but his teams haven’t had much preseason success of late, going 0-4 in 2014, 1-3 last year and are off to an 0-1 start in 2016.

Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase has his first head gig and is 1-0 thus far with last week’s win. He will aim to remain undefeated in this contest.

Free ATS Pick

The Cowboys were dreadful without Romo last season, finishing 1-11 in games he didn’t start which torpedoed the season. They are really hoping he remains healthy throughout 2016, but Prescott will aim to show he’s a worthy security blanket. If he can play as well as he did in the first exhibition game, it will be another positive step, and could help the Cowboys win this game. Ryan Tannehill will aim to get in a better rhythm after a slow start to his preseason. Matt Moore was good in his first game this year, and as is usually the case, these preseason games can come down to the performance of the backup quarterbacks. Dallas has the home field advantage and could emerge victorious in NFL betting.
