The Patriots and Giants will get their final tune-up in Week 4 of the preseason where New England will aim to wrap up a perfect 4-0 record in the exhibition slate. While all of the big names are expected to sit, Bill Belichick will be coaching, which should give the Patriots the edge.
This Week 4 preseason matchup will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at 7 p.m. ET on NFL Network at MetLife Stadium in New York, New York.
Odds Analysis
The Giants are at home, which is always an advantage, but the fourth preseason game can often tilt on a big game from a little-known backup. These outcomes can be the most volatile because there is precious little knowledge about who will step up. When in doubt, follow the talent of the quarterbacks, and in this case New England could make a push for the win.
Quarterback Rotation
Both sides have veteran stars in Tom Brady and Eli Manning. Brady is suspended the first four games of the season so there is the idea that maybe he should play in order to avoid rust, but it seems like too big of a risk behind a backup offensive line. Brady saw limited time last week against Carolina, finishing 3-for-9 for 76 yards and a touchdown in his only preseason appearance of the year.
Jimmy Garoppolo is the backup but will be needed in those first four games, so he could also be glued to the bench. It seems like Jacoby Brissett could be in line for plenty of playing time.
Brissett is 25-of-35 this preseason for 235 yards with a touchdown and would love to keep building on that. He is just a rookie but is getting invaluable experience, as playing time in the regular season could be non-existent.
The Giants could send backup quarterback Ryan Nassib out for a healthy dose of action. He is just 15-of-46 for 169 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the preseason.
Needless to say, Nassib’s completion percentage has been horrendous and if it stays that way his team will have precious little chance of winning this game. Third-stringer Logan Thomas is battling for a job but has not performer very well in the preseason and this may be his last shot to make a positive impression.
Coaching History
Bill Belichick is 39-30 in the preseason as the head coach of the Patriots. After finishing 3-1 in 2013, he has finished at .500 the last two years and is off to a 3-0 start in 2016.
Giants coach Ben McAdoo is the far less experienced coach in this matchup. The first-year coach is off to a 1-2 start this year, his first as an NFL head coach.
Free ATS Pick
The Patriots want to be cautious with their quarterbacks since both Brady and Garoppolo are guaranteed to be needed in the preseason. They will likely rely plenty on their third-stringer, but thus far Brissett has been much better than anything the Giants backup signal-callers have offered.
New England is a perfect 3-0 in the preseason and could aim for their fourth perfect exhibition mark in team history. The Giants have an explosive offense that has been missing in action during the preseason, and it isn’t expected to be much better with the stars on the sidelines.
Expect the pattern to continue in this one, with the Patriots coming away with the win despite using a plethora of backups. The Giants hope to get something out of Nassib to quiet any concern in case of a Manning injury during the season.
NFL Odds: Patriots 18, Giants 13
