Odds Analysis
The Eagles have gone undefeated so far this preseason and are at home this week. Backup quarterback Chase Daniel should get the start for Philadelphia this week and he seems to be improving each week this preseason while Geno Smith — the presumed starting quarterback for the Jets in this game — is declining as the preseason wears on. With all the starters out this week in preparation for the regular season, which starts next week, it will be a battle of the backups this week and the Eagles appear to have the better hand. Daniel was signed to a lucrative contract in the offseason and is one of the more talented backup quarterbacks in the NFL.
Quarterback Rotation
Smith will likely split time with rookie Christian Hackenberg against the Eagles. Smith has not impressed this preseason so far, completing just 17 of 32 passes for 140 yards with a touchdown and an interception. In his most recent outing against the Giants, the 25-year-old former starting quarterback for the Jets played two series, going 3-of-5 for 15 yards. Hackenberg had a beautiful start to his NFL preseason debut against the Giants last week, leading the Jets offense down the field on a 75-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson. Things got less pretty after that as the young quarterback ended the night throwing a late interception that gave the Giants the ball inside their own 10-yard line and led to their go-ahead touchdown in the Jets’ 21-20 loss. Hackenberg finished the night 6-of-16 passing for 105 yards with one touchdown and one costly interception. He was a second round pick in this year’s draft.
The Eagles should start Daniel, who should receive the bulk of the reps against the Jets. Daniel was just 4-for-10 for 15 passing yards in his first preseason game against Tampa Bay this season, but has improved steadily over the last two games. He threw for 82 yards against the Steelers and was 9-for-12 for 104 yards and a touchdown against the Colts. Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz could possibly make his preseason return Thursday night as well. The rookie quarterback suffered an injured rib in Philadelphia’s first preseason game of the year against the Buccaneers. Wentz has not practiced since the injury on August 11th, but participated in a full workout prior to the Eagles’ Week 3 preseason game against the Colts on August 27th. After the game, head coach Doug Pederson said Wentz could be back this week, pending his continued recovery. Wentz went 12-for-24 passing against Tampa Bay for 89 yards with one interception. The 23-year-old was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Coaching History
Doug Pederson is in his first season with the Eagles and in his first year as an NFL coach. He is off to a 3-0 start so far including a shutout against Pittsburgh on August 18th.
Todd Bowles is in his second season as the Jets head coach. The former defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals went 3-1 in the preseason last year, marking his NFL head coaching debut. He is 1-2 coming into this game against the Eagles and will look to finish the preseason at .500.
Free ATS Pick
The Eagles are looking like the better team so far this preseason and also have the advantage of playing at home this week. While Smith looked like the Jets’ quarterback of the future at one point, his star had dimmed of late. Now he’s just trying to show he deserves a spot on the team and could very well be outplayed by Daniel, which would lead Philadelphia to a win.
NFL Odds: Eagles 23, Jets 20
