Super Bowl 50 Props: Non-offensive scoring props

Offenses are clearly worth the mass majority of all points in football, but every now and again, you see some special plays on either defense or special teams that put points on the board when you're off at the fridge getting a beer. Here at Super Bowl 50, you can bet on whether there will be a defensive or special teams touchdown and whether there will be a safety as well.

You can find a slew of Super Bowl prop odds at BookMaker.eu.

We'll start with the safety. It's the scoring play that opened up Super Bowl 48 the last time the Broncos were in the big one, and it's a play which has come up nine times in 49 games in the Super Bowl. That's high when you relate it to the league average of a safety coming up once in every 10 games or so, but it's still notable. Safeties occur when there are jitters and good punters, and in this case, we've got both examples in play.

We've already seen Peyton Manning responsible for a safety in his Super Bowl career from his first snap against the Seahawks two years ago, and though Cam Newton is sure to be named the league's MVP on the eve of the big one, he's still playing in his first Super Bowl. The same can be said for most of his teammates as well.

Thanks to the outbreak of safeties in recent Super Bowls, the price on there being one in this game is only 6 to 1, far below what should be considered average. However, betting on the no at -1700 is a risky proposition and isn't generally valuable either.

Instead, there's much more value on betting on whether there will be a defensive or special teams touchdown in this game.

The first item of business to tackle here is in the kicking game. This game is being played in Santa Clara, not in Denver. That's not to say that Brandon McManus won't get his share of touchbacks, but we're willing to bet that there are at least a couple examples of kickoffs which are returned. Denver's kick coverage unit literally didn't have to do a thing on McManus' kickoffs in either of the playoff games at Mile High, as all of them soared into or through the end zone for touchbacks thanks in part to the thin air and the high altitude.

Ted Ginn Jr. is a dangerous return man whether we're talking about kicks or punts. He's going to be trying to make things happen every time he gets his hands on the ball. That doesn't mean that he's sure to find the end zone, of course, but there's probably a slightly greater chance of him being able to do the necessary damage on special teams when players tend to get out of their lanes to make big plays on the biggest stage.

The Panthers have scored on defense in each of the last two games, and Luke Kuechly has gotten the job done in each on a pick six. Manning led the league in interceptions returned for touchdowns, and you can also wager on whether he'll be responsible for a pick six in this game at a relatively low price of just 3 to 1.

Both of these NFL teams had a total of four defensive touchdowns in the regular season this year.

The price on there to be a non-offensive touchdown in this game is set at +140, while the no is priced at -170.
