They’re also designed to bring in the casual fans to make wagers on anything and everything imaginable. If you just want to see the pregame show and opening act, make a wager on the coin flip. Anybody who follows football closely knows of a player who missed time during the season due to a head injury. One of the most publicized of those players was Carolina’s Luke Kuechly, who missed the final six games of the regular season after sustaining a concussion while completing the most simple of tasks for an NFL defender – making a tackle. The scene of Kuechly getting carted off the field with tears rolling down his face was a reminder of just how important the game is to those who play it.
The league has been under scrutiny for a number of years due to the damage caused by repeated blows to a players head, and the safeguards in place today are as strict as they’ve ever been. With independent neurologists and concussion monitors on hand at every game, it’s likely we’ll see a player or two exit the game to get checked. But sitting out the remainder of the contest, especially one as important as the Super Bowl, will be a tall order for anyone.
Players know the risks but they compete on the gridiron without fear. A concussion, just like any injury, doesn’t discriminate and can happen at any time. With the violent nature of the game and the stakes the highest they’ve been all season, there will be some hard hits and the likelihood of a player leaving the game increases, which means taking the +130 is the wise bet.
Back in the day when a player got his bell rung, the training staff would give him some smelling salts and send him back in the game. Two years ago, New England’s Julian Edelman was rocked by Seattle’s Kam Chancellor in the Super Bowl and appeared to be concussed. Edelman stayed in the game and caught the eventual game-winning touchdowns pass.
But the league has stated player safety is one of its biggest concerns and allowing a situation like that to go without Edelman being taken out of the game to have the concussion tests run wouldn’t fly today. The NFL has been hit with multi-million dollar lawsuits regarding its knowledge of head injuries and has made strides with its concussion protocol. The league doesn’t want to appear negligent, especially when over 100 million people will be watching the game.
