The Patriots gave up just 21 overall passing touchdowns in the regular season, and only two more in the playoffs. The Falcons first two touchdowns of both games in the postseason were reeled in by Julio jones against the Seahawks and Mohamed Sanu against the Packers. New England’s overall pass defense is ranked No. 12 overall in allowing just 237.9 yards per game. With it also owning the league’s No. 3 ranked rush defense, you can’t help but expect Atlanta to look to the air early and often; especially with the Pats also conceding just six overall rushing touchdowns which equates to the best mark in the league.
Don’t let that deter you from still looking at Atlanta’s running backs as viable threats to score Super Bowl LI’s first and last touchdowns. It doesn’t matter how they get in, just as long as they do. With that the case, it would hardly come as a surprise to see either Tevin Coleman or Devonta Freeman take a dump-off or screen to the house. At +800 / +700 and +1000 / +1000 returns respectively, it’s certainly worth the gamble.
Atlanta enters its second ever Super Bowl appearance with the much lesser of the two defenses. While it ranked out a bit better defending the run ( No 17 ) as opposed to the pass ( No. 28 ), it still gave up its fair share of touchdowns both by land and by air. The Falcons gave up 15 rushing touchdowns in the regular season to rank in the middle of the pack, but also conceded a hefty 31 passing touchdowns as well which saw only Green Bay, Los Angeles, Detroit and Cleveland ranked below them.
With that the case, it’s nothing more than a pick your poison type of dart throw when it comes to figuring out who might score the first and last touchdowns of the game for the Patriots. With that the case, I’d recommend throwing your eggs into a big dog’s basket knowing Tom Brady has so many options at his disposal. That said, Atlanta did a great job of shutting down both rushing attacks it faced in the second season, so that makes me scratch LeGarrette Blount from the list of choices.
Speed kills, and the duo of Dion Lewis +1250 / +1250 and James White +1000 / +1000 have plenty of speed to burn a Falcons secondary that’s been torched on numerous occasions. Even if you take a flyer on each and one happens to cash the ticket, you’ll still come out nicely.
If it’s a game breaker that can beat any defense in open space, then there are two wide receivers on this list that fit the bill. Taylor Gabriel +1750 / +1300 has come up with a number of huge scoring jaunts for the Falcons in their stretch run to the postseason. If Matt Ryan is able to find him with some room to roam, look out!
For the Patriots, that guy is none other than Chris Hogan +1500 / +1350. The fourth year player found his niche in New England this season as Brady’s deep man, and he’s taken the gig and run with it. Though a thigh bruise has hampered him in practice the last couple weeks, he’ll be ready to go and looking to build off his breakout AFC Championship Game in which he went for 180 yards and 2 touchdowns. He seemingly comes up with a huge catch for major yardage every game, and it wouldn’t be shocking in the least if he managed to come down with one and leave the Falcons leaky secondary in his dust.
If value is what you crave, look no further than the Patriots defense/special teams +2210 / +3000 which has Julian Edelman +850 / +800 and Dion Lewis returning kicks and punts. Should you bet on each or one of the two and the Pats defense/special teams, you would cash both bets and get one heck of a return on investment! In doing so, you greatly increase your odds of cashing the ticket with so many different possibilities of scoring the game’s first and last touchdown.
