Week 14 NFL Odds - Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers Game Preview

Seahawks-at-Packers-bm

After playing themselves out of the playoff picture with a four-game losing streak, the Green Bay Packers have turned things around with consecutive victories and are back trying to join the party. It might be too little too late for them, but at least the Pack is going out fighting trying to keep their streak of seven straight postseason trips alive. They can remain in the hunt with a victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14.

Kickoff for this regular season Week 14 game is set for Sunday, December 11, 2016, at 4:25 p.m. ET at Lambeau Field.

Odds Analysis

The oddsmakers got this one right when they pegged the Seahawks as 3-point chalk. The early wagers have been evenly spread and we could see movement by not more than a half-point either way. There’s a chance we could see snow showers in the area on Sunday and that will likely contribute to the teams cashing the under.

Injury Report

Earl Thomas – Seattle’s defense suffered a major blow when Thomas fractured his tibia in a collision with a teammate against the Panthers. He’s been a fixture in the secondary since joining the team, and along with Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor has formed one of the best secondaries in football over the past several seasons. The defense will have a different look with Steven Terrell slotted to fill in.

Clay Matthews – Take your pick on the Green Bay injury situation, but the Matthews shoulder problem is significant. Matthews will attempt to play through the injury, much like he did last week, to at least give the Pack a warm body at linebacker. Matthews played fewer than half the defensive snaps against Houston and recorded no stats. He was effective, but he just couldn’t do much playing with one arm.

Matchup to Watch

It will be interesting to see just how Aaron Rodgers and the Packers attack the Seahawks now that Thomas is out for the year. Not only is Thomas a great teammate, he was the anchor in the secondary that had become a dominant fixture in the NFL over the past six seasons. The group isn’t going to fall apart and start surrendering 400 yards through the air, but there will be an adjustment period with Terrell taking over. Thomas is a five-time Pro Bowl player who flashed great range to cover the boundary, but also took away routes down the middle of the field. And when and opponent did catch a pass, Thomas made him pay as one of the best open field hitters in the game.

When Green Bay’s top two running backs where shelved with injuries, Rodgers and Mike McCarthy had to reinvent the offense. It took some time but the three-wide formation with another receiver in the backfield started to take hold. Ty Montgomery would line up behind Rodgers with Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb as wideouts. The setup took away the run and throwing the ball wasn’t surprising anyone, but the schemes worked. Safeties are responsible for the middle of the field and with the Pack running crossing routes and sending players out of the backfield it could be confusing for the most seasoned DBs.

Free ATS Pick

The Seahawks will have to overcome the loss of Thomas while the Packers have an entire linebacking corps on the injury list. We can talk about ways the Packers will exploit Seattle’s secondary, but there are more options for the Seahawks to take apart Green Bay’s defense. Just when Dom Capers gets his defensive backfield situated, up pops injuries to Matthews, Nick Perry, Blake Martinez and Jake Ryan to decimate the second level. Heck, even backup Kyler Fackrell has missed two games.

That leaves plenty of room open for Jimmy Graham and Luke Willson and you can bet the Seahawks are going to attack that part of the field with everything they have. There’s plenty at stake for the Packers while the Seahawks have all but wrapped up the NFC West. I believe the injury to Thomas is going to be more damaging and Seattle will need time to get used to playing without him. The Packers continue their resurgence with a narrow home field win.

NFL Odds: Packers 24, Seahawks 21
