Week 7 NFL Odds - Baltimore Ravens at New York Jets Game Preview

Ryan Fitzpatrick is doing a masterful job of making sure his streak of never appearing in a postseason game gets extended another year. Blame the offseason contract squabble with the New York Jets, but it’s likely Fitz just had a season beyond what he’s actually capable of last year. Todd Bowles benched Fitzpatrick in the fourth quarter Monday night, but said he’s sticking with the veteran. If things don’t improve in Week 7 against the Baltimore Ravens, it could be permanent.

Odds Analysis

Confidence with Jets’ backers is waning as 77 percent of the wagers are backing the visitors. New York opened as 1-point chalk but the game is currently a pick em. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the line move in favor of the Ravens at this point. Bowles gave his quarterback a vote of confidence, but the play lately hasn’t warranted it. Fitzpatrick could be on a short leash. With the total at 41.5, the under is getting over 80 percent of the action.

Injury Report

Terrell Suggs – The Ravens’ starting outside linebacker left the last game with a biceps injury and is unlikely to play against the Jets. Also, C.J. Mosley is questionable with a thigh injury and the Ravens have been without Elvis Dumervil all season as the linebacking corps isn’t quite what the team was hoping for at the start of the year.

Eric Decker – Was placed on injured reserve and is out for the year. He had hip surgery recently and will have his shoulder repaired in the offseason. The loss is big for Fitzpatrick and the Jets, who have failed to generate anything in the passing game during Decker’s absence.

Key Stat

New York is the place to be if you like turnovers. And I’m not talking about the tasty pastry. The Jets have been atrocious holding onto the football and Fitzpatrick has been the major culprit. It also doesn’t help that the defense has had little success in the takeaway department. Put that all together and the Jets own the worst turnover ratio in the NFL at minus-12. Fitzpatrick tossed his NFL-high 11th interception on Monday night, one of two New York giveaways, and the Jets have turned the ball over 15 times this season, the second-highest total in the league.

New York has at least one turnover in five of its six games and 13 of their giveaways have come in the past four contests. During that span the Jets are 0-4 and have been outscored by a combined 110-36. Yes, it’s been ugly. Todd Bowles pulled Fitzpatrick in the second half of Monday’s game and his backup, Geno Smith, wasn’t immune to the turnover bug, he promptly tossed a pick to end his first series.

Free ATS Pick

Just when you thought the Jets hit rock bottom, they fall even further. With their season hanging in the balance, New York was awful in a Monday night loss to the Cardinals. The offense has struggled most of the year along with Fitzpatrick, but the defense, in particular the run defense, caved in a loss to Arizona. The Jets are the proverbial snow ball rolling down hill and it doesn’t look like things are going to change anytime soon.

New York does catch a break with a reeling Ravens squad up next. The gauntlet is over following losses to Kansas City, Seattle, Pittsburgh and Arizona, some of the best in the league. With Baltimore followed by the Browns, the Jets have a chance to pull some positives out of what’s been a horrible year. The Ravens are looking at this game as a chance to end their slide and get back in the AFC North race, which is wide open now that Big Ben is going to miss some time for the Steelers. If the Ravens clean up their play and avoid costly silly penalties, they have a good chance at the road victory. The Jets’ quarterback situation scares me and that’s not favorable in a pick em game.

NFL Odds: Ravens 23, Jets 17
