The European Tour gets back in action this week after a layoff for the holidays and starts the 2016 season in Johannesburg, South Africa at the BMW South African Open.
Defending champion Andy Sullivan + 850 and Ernie Els + 4450 are the headliners. The tournament took a blow when Charl Schwartzel had to withdraw due to a virus he picked up over Christmas.
Other notable players scheduled to compete include David Howell + 3850, Jaco Van Zyl + 1850, rookie Paul Dunne and major winners Trevor Immelman and Retief Goosen + 3400.
This year’s event will be held at Glendower Golf Club and will be the sixth time that it has hosted this big event. The course measures close to 7,500 yards but it also is 5,000 feet above sea level so the ball will go forever. Most of the players are familiar with the course, it’s been around a long time and hosted a Sunshine Tour event every year since that Tour started.

ODDS ANALYSIS
Defending champion Andy Sullivan +850 kicked off his career here a year ago when he beat Charl Schwartzel in a playoff. The Englishman’s rise in the rankings started at Glendower and came in his 84th European Tour start and he then made it two wins in 89 after landing the Joburg Open soon after. Sullivan added a third victory in 2015 with a runaway victory in the Portugal Masters and then pushed Rory McIlroy all the way before finishing runner-up in the DP World Tour Championship. The time is now for the smiling Sullivan to make his mark and keep the mojo going strong.
Veteran David Howell +3850 finished second three times on the European Tour a year ago. He hasn’t played Glendower Golf Club since 1997 but the course should set up well for him to show us his top form short game skills. Howell is one of the best putters on Tour and that will come in handy this week where players will need to make a ton of birdies in order to do well.
One player to stay away from is George Coetzee + 3000 who is coming off an injury and his game will be rusty. If Coetzee is in a matchup, fade him!
If you like long shots, Daniel Im is a great pick. He is a rookie on the European Tour, trying to make his mark and retain his card. He won the European Tour qualifying in November and is primed to get off to a fast start in 2016.
