Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia lead the field for the British Masters, which begins on Thursday. McIlroy is listed as the favorite at odds of +800, while Garcia has been getting some late money and is now a close second choice at odds of +904. As I noted in the overall preview, I think Garcia should be listed as the favorite, as McIlroy has been playing hurt for more than a month. I went a perfect 5-0 with the matchups in last week’s Portugal Masters. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s British Masters.

British Masters Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. The Colt Course opened in 2011 and is definitely short at 6,906 yards. The course is hilly and rain could be a factor this weekend, so length off the tee is definitely one of the factors we’ll look at. Wind is also in the forecast, so players who know how to control their ball should also do well this week.
Sergio Garcia -109 vs. Rory McIlroy
I said in the overall preview for this event that I think Garcia should be the favorite to win and not McIlroy. If you have followed the PGA matchups you know that I have done really well going against McIlroy the past month. There is no doubting the talent of Rory and I am sure next season I will go with him in some of the matchups, but not now. The run of going against Rory may end but he is still playing hurt and I am going against him until next season. It doesn’t hurt that we get a quality player in Garcia to take in this matchup. He his eighth on the PGA Tour in Greens in Regulation and he ranks 12th in strokes gained: tee-to-green. The only concern is that it is the third time this season he is playing three weeks in a row, but this is a play against McIlroy.
Alex Noren +136 vs. Rory McIlroy
This is the other McIlroy matchup and I will take Noren at the nice price. I am shocked that Rory is such a big favorite. Noren has played well this season and he is the defending champion of this event. He has six top 10 finishes this season including a tie for 6th in the European Masters a couple of weeks ago.
George Coetzee +105 vs. Martin Kaymer
I am a bit surprised Kaymer is favored in this matchup. It has not been a good season for Kaymer who has not finished in the Top 20 in any of his last ten events. Coetzee is has finished in the top 10 in the last two weeks and he has seven top 10 finishes on the European Tour this year. He is a good driver, ranking 8th on the European Tour so he should do well on this course.
Jordan Smith -103 vs. Haotong Li
Smith is likely going to win the Rookie of the Year on the European Tour. He has been extremely consistent with five top 10 finishes this season and just two missed cuts. He is making a run at a top 50 world ranking which would get him into the World Golf Championships and the four majors. He has been off the past two weeks so he will be well rested.
