Odds Analysis

Thorbjorn Olesen +1250

It is hard to argue with Olesen being listed as the favorite this week, as he normally plays well in the Middle East. He finished third in this event in 2014 and he finished second two years ago.

Andy Sullivan +1650

Sullivan is finally starting to play well after having a rotten 2017 season. He has finished tied for 6th, tied for 17th and tied for 16th in the last three weeks. He finished tied for 9th in this event in 2013 and in the last two years he tied for 19th and tied for 28th. I think he could finish in the top 20 but he is overvalued at these odds to win the tournament.

Jeunghun Wang +1850

The defending champion is probably overvalued, as his win last year was a surprise. He has played pretty well to start this season with a tie for 15th in Abu Dhabi, a tie for 6th in Dubai and last week he tied for 26th.

George Coetzee +2050

He hasn’t played that great of late but he sure does like playing this course, as he has a 2nd, 5th, 12th and 7th place finish. He did miss the cut last year, so there is cause for concern, but he did play well last week in the Dimension Data Pro-Am and he is capable of beating a relatively weak field.

Chris Wood +2050

I like Wood as a solid choice this week. He finished second last week, so he is playing well and he won this event in 2013. He has three other top 20 finishes in this event including a tie for 11th last year.

Thomas Detry +2550

I give Detry a chance to contend this week, as he is playing well of late and he finished in the top 30 in this event a year ago. Scrambling is important in Qatar and Detry was second in scrambling last week in Oman.

Seung Su Han +3050

Han definitely comes in playing well, as he has five top five finishes in his last nine starts. He tied for 4th last week in Oman and he shot 70 or lower in all four rounds.

Alexander Bjork +3550

The first of my two longshots this week is Bjork who finished 12th last week. He tied for 28th last year and if not for a bad third round would have contended. He was the best in scrambling last week in Oman and that bodes well for this week.

Mattieu Pavon +4550

It was looking good for Pavon last week after two rounds but he stumbled over the weekend to fall to a tie for 31st. He played well in this event a year ago and it shouldn’t be long before he gets a win and it could be this week.

Course: Doha Golf Club is a par 72 that measures 7,400 yards. It is similar in some respects to the Abu Dhabi course, as both were designed by Peter Harradine. Doha has Bermuda greens but the greens are said to be rougher than those in some other areas of the Middle East. Water is in play on six of the 18 holes and the course is a bit different because it starts with a par 5 and also ends with a par 5.
