Golf Matchups: Porsche European Open

Porshe-European-Matchups---Euro--bm

The betting field is what you would expect the week after a major championship, lackluster at best. Patrick Reed, at No. 26, is the highest ranked player in the betting field and Germany’s best player, Martin Kaymer, isn’t teeing it up. South African, Charl Schwartzel and American Jimmy Walker give the tournament two former major winners, but after that, there’s a huge dropoff of talent.

But as the saying goes, the show must go on and there are some intriguing golf matchups to wager on.

Venue: The North Course at Green Eagle Golf Courses in Hamburg hosts the tournament for the first time. The track measures 7,582 yards and plays to a par 72. Green Eagle previously played host to the ECCO Tour Championship on the European Challenge Tour in 2010.

Charl Schwartzel -115 vs. Patrick Reed -115

This is the power matchup of the week. Reed isn’t up to snuff and Schwartzel is erratic. The South African is the better ball-striker, but the American has a better short game. In the end, I will take the better putter and that would be Patrick Reed.

Alexander Levy -125 vs Jimmy Walker -105

Levy is the defending champion, but on a different venue. Walker has been battling Lymes Disease most the season, but appears to be handling it quite well and starting to play better. It’s always tough to defend and let’s face it, Walker is the better player.

Paul Dunne -125 vs. Pat Perez -105

Clearly the better player is Perez, but he’s a little out of his comfort level playing for the first time in Germany. Dunne is a regular on the European Tour and will win this matchup. It’s a Dunne deal!

Chase Koepka -125 vs. Jorge Campillo -105

Koepka gets a sponsor’s exemption, while Campillo is a regular on the European Tour. The Spaniard should be the favorite, not Koepka. I’m backing Campillo.

David Lipsky -120 vs Austin Connelly -110

The 20-year old Connelly played well last week in the Open Championship finishing T14. We got a glimpse of what we may see in the future from Connelly who shares the same coach as open champion Jordan Spieth. Lipsky doesn’t have the talent to stay with Connelly.

The Porsche European Open is scheduled to start July 27-30, 2017 at Green Eagle Golf Course in Hamburg, Germany. The Golf Channel will televise the event.
