Wow, the European Tour season just ended with Rory McIlroy’s impressive win and now we are starting the new season four days later.
The Alfred Dunhill Championship in Malelane, South Africa gets started this Thursday. As you would expect, the field is short on talent. Defending champion Branden Grace +420 and fellow South Africans Charl Schwartzel +650 and Louis Oosthuizen +850 headline this week’s event.
The tournament is more like a South African Open then it is a European Tour event. The field is loaded with the home country’s talent and most of them even I haven’t heard of. None the less we do have a tournament and I will watch because the host venue, Leopard Creek Country Club is fantastic. The Gary Player design is located in the jungle and just last year Luke Donald was getting ready to hit his approach shot and had to stop because two monkeys were roaming the fairway. You don’t see that very often.
Extensive use has been made of water hazards and sightings of crocodile, hippo, antelope, buffalo and wild boar are commonplace, either on the course itself or in or next to the river running alongside several holes. Man, I might be scared to tee it up there.

ODDS ANALYSIS
Branden Grace +420 is fresh off a third place finish in the 2015 Race to Dubai and will look to get off to a fast start to launch his 2016 bid with a win. And he has every chance of doing so having cruised to a seven-shot win in this very event last year. Clearly, Grace is South Africa’s No. 1 golfer these days after rounding off a huge season so if they have him in a matchup against Schwartzel and Oosthuizen, which they likely will, get down on Grace!
Jaco Van Zyl +2925 loves playing at home in South Africa. In his last six starts on home soil he has two second places, two thirds, a T6 and a T15. Thats Solid!
Joost Luiten +4050 has had a disappointing year and his 50th place on the 2015 Race to Dubai was his worst finish since 2009. After being snubbed for last year’s Ryder Cup team, Luiten has been in a funk. He’s not played this event in the current decade but back in 2007 the Dutchman closed 64-67 on the weekend to crack the top four. I am fading Luiten this week.
