Golf Odds - DP WORLD TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP - DUBAI Preview

The climax on the European Tour is this week when the top 60 players in the Race to Dubai standings square off at the DP World Tour Championship.

Two-time defending champion Henrik Stenson +675 and Race to Dubai points leader Rory McIlroy +575 are the betting favorites. Justin Rose +800, Danny Willett +1200 and red hot American Patrick Reed +1375 are also in the field.

Everyone is chasing McIlroy. He admits he would be disappointed to leave Jumeirah Golf Estates without The Race to Dubai trophy, but Danny Willett has his sights set on causing an upset at the DP World Tour Championship.

The pair are separated by just 1,613 points after 47 tournaments, meaning whoever finishes higher this week is likely to finish the season as European Number One – although there are five players who could snatch The Race to Dubai crown if both McIlroy and Willett finish down the leaderboard.

“It's always great to come back to Dubai,” said the Northern Irishman.

“A place where I've got a lot of great memories - going back six years, winning my first professional title to Dubai Desert Classic, winning a couple of Race to Dubai titles and winning the Dubai Desert Classic again this year, it's always been a great place for me.”

The pressure is clearly on both players and you have to give the nod to McIlroy who not only has the lead, but has been there and done that and will be the betting favorite this week in Dubai.

Another story this week is Henrik Stenson. The Swede is aiming for a hat-trick this week and feels good about his game. “It's one of my favourite weeks of the year, as you know, and I'm excited about the opportunity to make it three in a row,” he said.

“It's not going to be easy, I know that much. I've got 59 other players who want to stop me dearly and I'm just going to go out and try and make the same plan and hopefully play somewhat close to what I've done the previous two years, and we'll see if we can give it a shot.”

ODDS ANALYSIS

Henrik Stenson +780 has won this tournament in both 2013 and 2014, shooting a combined 41-under-par in the process. Just like last year, he’ll arrive at the Earth course seeking his first win of the season after a string of near misses. The latest came in Shanghai last week when he finished just one shot out of the playoff while he’d been runner-up in three of his six previous starts. The Swede is over-due to say the least and coming to a place where he used to live and had huge success on, he is my pick.

Thomas Pieters +3000 is figuring things out in a hurry. The Belgian picked up two wins this year, one in August and another in September. He also tied for fourth in Abu Dhabi earlier in the season to show a liking for desert golf. He hits it long and putts well - a recipe for success this week.

Martin Kaymer +4000 is fighting it right now and never has had success on the venue this week. The German has never had a top 10 in six starts at this event and this should act as a warning, a red flag for sure. He’s also slumping to the finish in this year’s Race to Dubai after nothing better than a T30 in his last four starts. Look elsewhere this week and fade Kaymer.
