The European Tour heads to India this week for the Hero Indian Open where local favorites Shubankar Sharma and Anirban Lahiri are two of the top contenders. Sharma, Lahiri, Chris Wood and Joost Luiten are listed as co-favorites at odds of +1250. Odds Analysis
Chris Wood +1250
Wood finished 2nd at the Oman Open and tied for 13th in the Qatar Masters, so he could be in the mix this week. I do think he is overvalued at these odds considering he has not played this course before.
Joost Luiten +1250
You can make a case for taking Luiten, as he won the Oman Open before a so-so effort in Mexico. He has played plenty of times in the past in India, but his success has been limited. I think he might be a bit overvalued at these odds.
Shubankar Sharma +1250
I was definitely wrong about Sharma last week in Mexico, as he played really well for three rounds. I think a letdown is almost a given this week and I think he is overvalued at these odds.
Anirban Lahiri +1250
I think Lahiri should be the favorite this week. He tied for 5th in this event a year ago and that was after an opening 76. He has proven in the past that he can win on his home soil and I give him a big chance this week.
Emiliano Grillo +1550
Grillo has played well recently on the PGA Tour with a tie for 8th in the Honda Classic and a tie for 12th in the Farmers. He hasn’t played this course before, so that is a concern, especially at these odds.
Jeunghun Wang +2050
Wang has good form this year with a tie for 26th in Oman and a tie for 6th in Dubai, but this will be his first time playing this course competitively. He finished second at Delhi, but DLF is completely different.
SSP Chawrasia +2250
I can’t leave out the defending champion, as anyone that won by seven shots the previous year is worth considering. He has not played well of late, but we have seen that before with Chawrasia and then he goes out and wins.
Paul Peterson +2250
Peterson was sixth at the halfway mark in this event a year ago and then stumbled. He has played pretty well of late and in his last start in India he finished second in the Panasonic Open.
Scott Jamieson +3250
He finished third in this event last year and he played well last week with a tie for 7th at the Tshwane Open. I think he has definite value and he is my longshot pick this week.
Course: The DLF Golf and Country Club course was supposedly 7,657 yards last year but that was not the reality. It played shorter than that distance, as holes were shortened seemingly at random. That doesn’t mean the course isn’t long in places, as there is a par 3 that measures 273 yards and a par 4 that is 550 yards. Scoring was poor last year, as there were just two rounds in the 60’s in round two. The course is listed this year as measuring 7,412 yards.
