After a year absence, the European Tour returns to Lake Karrinyup Country Club for the 2016 ISPS Handa Perth International. The tournament used to be the final event on the schedule before the Final Series from 2012-2014, then skipped a year before finding a new February slot this year.
Defending champion Thorbjorn Olesen and major winner Louis Oosthuizen headline a field that lacks a lot of star power. Due to the time of year and upcoming tournaments, the tournament struggled to find world class players.
Olesen is excited to be back. He said: “I really like Australia in general, and especially Perth. It’s just a shame that it’s so far from Europe, or else I would visit a lot more. The people are great, the food’s really good and I just like the vibe of the place. It’s nice and relaxed, Australians have a good attitude to life, and you can have fun. The course is also great, so I’m really looking forward to going back to defend my title.”
Last week’s winner Marcus Fraser and Frenchman Victor Dubuisson are the other two notable players scheduled to compete.
Lake Karrinyup Country Club is similar to a links style layout, but many of the holes are tree-lined which you don’t normally find on a links course. The venue measures 7,143 yards and plays to a par 72. The course will be firm and fast which will make the course more challenging than previous years.

ODDS ANALYSIS
Lucas Bjerregaard +2800 is one of the longest hitters on the European Tour, but thrives on short courses. This week’s track is short which is right in the Dane’s wheelhouse. Bjerregaard played here in 2014 and played well. Despite carding an 8 the final round, he managed to finish an impressive T4. I like his chances this week.
Mikko Ilonen +2950 is quietly off to a great start to the year after notching his fourth consecutive top 25. His putter is red hot, his scrambling has been spot on - two important ingredients to playing great golf. The Finn keeps it going and churns out another top 25 this week in Perth.
I love fading the previous week’s winner. Marcus Fraser won last week in Malaysia and now he comes home to a heroes welcome in the land of down under. His focus and preparation will be off and so will his game. Fraser struggles this week!
