The European Tour heads to Western Australia for the 2017 ISPS HANDA World Super 6 where Alex Noren +800, Louis Oosthuizen +900 and Thorbjorn Olesen +1750 are the headliners. Noren won four times last year, Oosthuizen is a major winner and Olesen is a two-time European Tour winner.
Other notables scheduled to play include American Peter Uihlein +1500, Marcus Fraser +2750, David Horsey +6500 and reigning U.S. Amateur champion Curtis Luck +3000.
The tournament has a unique format that is the first of its kind. A cut will be made after 36 holes in stroke play format and another cut after 54 holes with the low 24 competitors moving on to Sunday’s final round and that’s where it gets interesting. The low 24 will play six-hole matches with the winners moving on to the next round. If there is a tie or ties for the 24th spot, a sudden death playoff will determine the outcome.
Any matches tied after the six holes on Sunday will be decided by playing a Knockout Hole. The hole will be constructed at Lake Karrinyup and measure somewhere around 100 yards. The new tee will be placed adjacent to the 18th fairway and utilizing the 18th green. It’s like putt-putt golf in a way.
The Knockout Hole will be played once and if a winner is still not decided. The competitors will return to the new tee with the winner decided on a closest to-the-pin contest where only the first shot counts. Wild Wild West Australia!
The Course: Lake Karrinyup is the host track. The layout is a tree-lined 7,143-yard par 72 featuring fairly wide fairways and Penn G6 Bent grass greens. Opened in 1929, it was designed by Alex Russell, the Aussie partner of iconic architect Alister MacKenzie who designed Augusta National among others. Geoff Ogilvy and Mike Clayton did further work on it in 2007. It’s hosted big tournaments in the past, including four Australian Opens, two Johnnie Walker Classics and, more recently, the European Tour’s Perth International in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

ODDS ANALYSIS
Anything can happen in a match play format and usually does. I am going out on a limb and taking the current U.S. Amateur champion Curtis Luck +3000. Well, why not, it’s a weak field, the 20-year old is from Western Australia and obviously knows a thing or two about playing match play having won the the biggest amateur in all of golf.
American Peter Uihlein +1500 is another U.S. Amateur winner and is back playing solid golf after being injured most of last year. So far this year he has two top 10’s in four starts - a T7 in the South African Open and T5 in the Dubai Desert Classic. Uihlein knows the course this week which is an added bonus, he’s accumulated a T4 and T9 in the two Perth International starts.
