ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth Preview, Odds and Predictions

The European Tour heads to Australia this week for the ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth. It is a unique event because the final day of play is nothing like the first three days. The first three days are normal stroke play and there is the standard cut after 36 holes but after Saturday’s third round there is another cut to just 24 players, and Sunday’s action is match play. If the odds are any indication, it should be a wide-open event, as no player is listed at less than +2050 to win the tournament.

Odds Analysis

Lee Westwood +2050

If you look at current form then it is hard to like Westwood, as he missed cuts in Abu Dhabi and Dhabi but at least he tied for 11th at the Maybank Championship last week. He does have good match play experience but I still think he is overvalued at these odds.

Thorbjorn Olesen +2050

You can make a case for Olesen, as he won the 2014 Perth International and he has good match play experience. He teamed up with Lucas Bjerregaard to win the GolfSixes last May.

Ryan Fox +2250

Fox made the cut in this event for Sunday last year but then didn’t do enough to make the final. He played well last week, as he tied for third at the Maybank Championship. He could be undervalued at these odds.

Jason Scrivener +2250

If you want experience, then Scrivener is your guy, as he reached the last four in this event a year ago and he was third in the 2016 Perth International on this course. He is definitely worth considering at these odds.

Paul Peterson +2250

Peterson played well last week at the Maybank Championship, as he tied for 11th. He has moved up the rankings in recent weeks, so his current form tells us he has a shot, but he missed the cut at the 2016 Perth International on this course.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat +2250

The one plus if you like Kiradech is that he has done well in match play in the past, as he won the Paul Lawrie Match Play title in 2015. His current form is spotty, but if he can get to Sunday he could hit at nice odds.

David Lipsky +2550

I think Lipsky is due to win very soon and it could be this week. He was just 17th last week but he tied for 6th in Dubai and he tied for 9th in the Perth International two years ago on this course.

Hideto Tanihara +2850

One of my two longshots, if you can really consider anyone a big longshot this week, is Tanihara. He has really done well in match play in his career and he made it to Sunday in this event last year. He tied for 5th last week in Malaysia so he is playing well.

Andrew Johnston +3250

Why not ‘Beef’ at big odds this week? He is one of the highest ranked players in the field and he has played well on this course win the past. He will sure have the fans in his corner in this event.

Course and Tourney Info: Normally I talk about the course first but in this case I have to mention the format. Picking a winner of this event is not going to be easy because after the first three rounds everything resets to zero. Only the top 24 make it to Sunday and the top eight get a bye into the second round. The other 16 players play match format for six holes with the eight winners advancing. The match format continues with the final 16 players going head-to-head in six-hole match play. Brett Rumford won this event a year ago and he was the 54-hole leader. Leading after 54-holes helps, but it is not a guarantee of anything. The 24th player who just made the cut to Sunday nearly won this event last year, but Rumford beat Phachara Kongwhatmai in the final match.

This event is played at Lake Karrinyup, which is a par 72 that measures just 7,143 yards. It is lined with trees but the fairways are wide. This course hosted the Perth International in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.
