The European Tour makes one more stop in South Africa before the Middle East Swing begins next week. This week the Joburg Open gets underway in Johannesburg, South Africa.
With the upcoming Middle East Swing, the field is weak. To make matters worse, the Eurasia Cup is being played this week, so a lot of the top players that would be playing, aren’t! It’s a tough break for the tournament.
The headliners this week include Jaco Van Zyl, David Howell and two-time winner of this event, Richard Sterne. Like I said the field is depleted, but the show must go on and with the lack of star players, the opportunity is there for a young player to grab a win and jumpstart their careers.
The tournament has a unique format where two courses are used over the first two days, similar to the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour. Maybe that is why the elite players stay away.

You probably have never heard of Daniel Im but you will in the near future. After scuffling for years on the mini-tours, Im won the European Tour School and is off to a great start with a T8 last week, which included a final round 65. The former UCLA standout is ready for big time golf and ready to pounce on this week’s lame field.
David Howell +3092 is a veteran player who makes just enough money to get buy to keep his playing privileges and this has to catch up to him. Howell is regarded as one of the best putters on the European Tour, but the flatstick has gone cold and so has his game. He likely will be paired up against a good player in the weekly golf matchups and his game won’t hold up. Fade Howell!
David Drysdale +5050 has three top three finishes in his long career - two of them are here at Royal Kensington. He thrives playing in this part of the world and will churn out a top finish this week. Drysdale will be in the mix and is a top ten waiting to happen this week in Johannesburg.
