Defending champion and local favorite Joost Luiten is favored to win the KLM Open, which begins on Thursday in the Netherlands. Luiten has two wins and five top ten finishes in this event. Luiten is listed with odds of +1600 to win this event and the only other player listed with odds of less than +2500 is Bernd Wiesberger at +1800. We went 2-2 last week with the matchup picks in the European Masters. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s KLM Open.

KLM Open Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. The Dutch is this week’s course and we don’t have a ton of data to consider, as it has hosted this event just once. What we do know is that the weather is going to be a major factor this week, as rain is in the forecast for all four days and it should be windy. Players that are good at scrambling should have the advantage in what are expected to be difficult conditions in the Netherlands.
Joost Luiten -190 vs. Ryan Fox
With the weather expected to be bad so I am going to focus entirely on scrambling as the key stat in this week’s matchups. Luiten is 18th on the European Tour in scrambling and he is the defending champion while Fox is just 155th in scrambling. I am not thrilled about laying the price but I am still going to take Luiten in this matchup.
Bernd Wiesberger -185 vs. Ryan Fox
This matchup is almost identical to the previous one, as Wiesberger ranks 19th in scrambling and he finished second in this event last year. I will also lay the price in this matchup and take Wiesberger.
Adrian Otaegui -145 vs. Eddie Pepperell
Otaegui got his first European Tour win at the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play a few weeks ago. He has five top 20 finishes in his last six starts including two top five finishes. He played well in this event last year and led the field in Putts per Greens in Regulation. Ataegui is 59th in scrambling, while Pepperell is just 128th. Otaegui said that his entire year changed in June when he went back to Spain and worked with his coach. He said on his blog that everything clicked in France when he won and since then his confidence has been sky high. I will lay the price and take Otaegui in this matchup.
Lee Westwood -127 vs. Julian Suri
We know that Westwood likes links courses and bad weather doesn’t bother him. I also think he will be more focused now that his celebration over playing in his 500th European Tour event is over. Westwood also has a slight edge over Suri in scrambling, as he ranks 103rd, while Suri ranks 113th. I will lay the small price and take Westwood.
Mikko Ilonen +104 vs. Kiradech Aphibarnrat
My one underdog in the matchups this week is Ilonen who ranks 48th on the European Tour in scrambling, while Aphibarnrat ranks 165th.
