The inaugural Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play tournament is scheduled for this week in Aberdeen, Scotland. The field consists of 64 players and the format is a straight knock out match play, if you lose, you go home!
Tournament host Paul Lawrie is joined by Marc Warren, Richie Ramsay, Alexander Levy, Chris Wood and Peter Uihlein as the headliners for this week’s European Tour event. Other notables include John Daly, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, David Howell and Matthew Fitzpatrick.
The host course for this week’s tournament is Murcar Links which sits right next door to Royal Aberdeen which hosted the 2014 Scottish Open won by Justin Rose. So, yes, this is a pure links layout. Windswept and protected by pot bunkers, burns, gorse, heather and narrow, crumpled fairways. The venue was founded in 1909 and measures 6,409 yards and will play to a par 71. On paper it looks to be rather short but with plenty of blind shots, gnarly rough and strong winds blowing in off the North Sea, the course will be difficult. Those who can consistently find the short grass off the tee and control their ball in the wind will be best equipped to take it on. The day after finishing T40 in the Open Championship at St. Andrews, Lawrie said on his website, “I popped over to Murcar Links yesterday afternoon and was very impressed how the whole place looks. The course looked in perfect shape.”

Tyrrell Hatton had 23 birdies and an eagle and finished third in last week’s Omega European Masters. He also had seven bogeys and a triple. That style of play makes him a dangerous opponent in the match play format. The young Englishman has also done well on links courses by finishing T4 in the Irish Open at Royal County Down and T22 in the Scottish Open at Gullane. Hatton squares off against Darren Fichardt in round one and will win going away.
Matthew Fitzpatrick tangles with Bradley Dredge in the first round. Dredge is old enough to be Fitzpatricks dad, in fact, when the Welshman first teed it up on The European Tour in 1994, Fitzpatrick wasn't born yet. Fitzpatrick is coming off his best finish of his young career, runner-up to Danny Willett in Switzerland. The young Englishman continues his hot streak by sending Dredge home early.
