The Maybank Championship Malaysia is the newest addition on the European Tour and with a purse of $3 million U.S. the inaugural event has attracted a stellar field.
Major champions including Martin Kaymer +1823 of Germany, Louis Oosthuizen +1763 of South Africa and Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland, who will also captain the continent in The Ryder Cup.
Young stars Danny Willett +985 and Matthew Fitzpatrick +2450, both from England, will both contend for the title. Willett recently won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Fitzpatrick is a rising star in the world of golf.
Asian Tour Order of Merit winners David Lipsky of the United States, Juvic Pagunsan of the Philippines, Arjun Atwal and Jeev Milkha Singh of India and Thai trio Thaworn Wiratchant, Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Thongchai Jaidee will also be in the mix.
Kiradech Aphibarnrat, the 2013 Asian Tour number one, is the most talented of the Thai talent and will draw on his winning memories in Malaysia three years ago.
“Malaysia is like a second home to me and the victory in Malaysia in 2013 really helped me achieve the success which I have today,” he said. “I like coming back to Malaysia because the people are friendly and I have a lot of fans here. The weather is also hot and it suits my game.”
In all, seven players ranked inside the top 50 are on hand with Willett, at No. 13, being the highest ranked player in the field.

ODDS ANALYSIS
After ending 2015 with seven top 20s in his final eight starts, Matthew Fitzpatrick +2450 has struggled to regain that form with average results his last three times out. He has to be disappointed with his last three starts in the desert - T26 Abu Dhabi, MC Qatar, T45 Dubai. However, he did hit more fairways than anyone in Dubai and that ability may be better rewarded at Royal Selangor, where accuracy is a major factor. The Englishman is a lock for a top 20 and get his season finally started with a good finish.
Joost Luiten +1765 is back playing great golf. He is coming off a huge “Desert Swing” where he kicked it off with a T5 in Abu Dhabi, posted T13 in Qatar and then challenged seriously in the Dubai Desert Classic before settling for T8. The strength of his game is hitting it straight, keeping it in play and attacking from there. This week’s venue will fit right into his game plan.
If you are looking for someone to fade, his name is Kristoffer Broberg. The young Swede continues to struggle and now comes to a country where in seven career starts, he has one top 20 finish and three missed cuts. FADE the SWEDE!
