Henrik Stenson and last week’s winner Haotong Li, lead the field for this week’s Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur. Stenson is the clear betting favorite at odds of +700, while Li and Alexander Levy are co-second choices at odds of +1600. This is just the third year for this tournament as part of the European Tour schedule and it is only the second time that Saujana Golf and Country Club in Kuala Lumpur will host the event. Odds Analysis
Henrik Stenson +700
I think you can make a strong case that Stenson should be listed at lower odds, as this field in Kaula Lumpur is weak. Stenson is the clear standout in the field and he is playing well with a T8 in Abu Dhabi and T6 in the Dubai Desert Classic.
Haotong Li +1600
Li was extremely impressive last week, as he held off Rory McIlroy to win the Dubai Desert Classic. Normally I don’t back players to win in back-to-back weeks, but Li played well in this event last year and if Stenson falters, Li could be right in the mix.
Alexander Levy +1600
Levy played well in the Middle East with a tie for 7th and a tie for 4th. He finished fourth in this tournament last year. He beat Kiradech Aphibarnrat in the EurAsia Cup in Kuala Lumpur earlier this season.
Bernd Wiesberger +2000
Wiesberger played in the EurAsia Cup and played well and last year in this event he shot a second-round 63 but couldn’t follow that up, as he shot 73 in the third round. He always seems to play well in Asia, so he has some appeal at these odds.
Dylan Frittelli +2500
I am really starting to come around on Frittelli, as he has finished first, second, fourth and sixth in his last ten starts. He could move into the top 50 in the World Rankings this week.
Jeunghun Wang +3300
If Stenson doesn’t win then I think a big longshot could hit this week. Wang played well in the Middle East with a tie for 15th and a tie for 6th. He has excellent scrambling stats and he could be a threat.
David Lipsky +4000
Lipsky has won twice previously on the Asian Tour and he nearly won this event a year ago but finished second to Zanotti. He played well last week with a tie for 6th and I think he has a lot of value at these odds.
Fabrizio Zanotti +5000
I can’t forget about the defending champion at big odds. He shot a 63 in the final round to win this event a year ago. He didn’t play well last week but two weeks ago he tied for 9th in Dubai.
Chris Hanson +10000
I wanted to mention Hanson as well, as he is an excellent scrambler and he finished well last week with a tie for 6th.
Course: Saujana is a par 72 that measures just 7,196 yards. It features small greens and a lot of undulations. The course is lined with palm trees, so driving accuracy is important. Birdies have been plentiful on this course, as Fabrizio Zanotti shot 19-under par last year. Putting and scrambling were the most important stats to consider last year for picking the winner in this event.
