The European Tour heads to Turkey for the first event of the Final Series in the Race to Dubai. The Turkish Airlines Open is just three years old, but has quickly established itself on the schedule. The course is popular with the players and the purse has grown every year.
Players will have their eye on earning a spot in the top 60 which will secure them a spot in the season ending DP World Tour Championship.
World No. 1 Rory McIlroy +455 headlines the betting field and it’s his debut in Turkey, however, he did play here for the World Golf Final three years ago when he lost all three of his medal match play ties at Antalya GC and was the only player to finish the opening 54 holes over par. Maybe the course doesn’t fit his eye or maybe he just wasn’t playing well, either way I am staying away from McIlroy this week.
Red hot Matthew Fitzpatrick +2050, Shane Lowry +1615, Danny Willett +2550 and Ian Poulter +2600 are all scheduled to compete in the star-studded event.
Montgomerie Maxx Royal will host this year’s event for the third consecutive year. The layout measures 7,133 yards and plays to a par 72. The unusual part of the layout is the five par fives and five par threes. Danny Willett noted last year, “All you need to do is miss a couple of the fairways at the wrong times by a few yards and a few of the trees are in the way.”

Matthew Fitzpatrick +2050 is a rising star on the European Tour. The Englishman has had eight top 10 finishes this season, four of them in his last six starts. He's not the longest hitter on tour and prefers the shorter tests, but there's no reason to think this track will overpower him if the rain stays away. The kid is consistent and why I am on board with him this week in Turkey.
Another Englishman to keep your eye on is Andy Sullivan +2075. He won in his last outing in Portugal two weeks ago to secure his third win of the season. Note, he won by nine shots! In his first visit to Maxx Royal last year he reaped a fourth placed finish that might have been better but for a poor second round. Sullivan keeps it rolling with another strong finish.
Since taking six weeks off in August and September, Fabrizio Zanotti +4850 has been one of the hottest players on tour, racking up three top four finishes in five starts, most recently a runner-up in the British Masters. He made a promising debut in the event last year, finishing T19. The strength of his game is hitting greens and that is a necessity this week at Antalya.
Joost Luiten +6050 has fallen off the face of the earth as far as golf goes. After eight top 10 finishes in 2013 and nine in 2014, this year he’s managed just one, a T4 in the Scottish Open. That was one of only two top 20 finishes in his last 18 stroke-play starts. If Luiten is on the board, bet against him!
