Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia lead the field for the UBS Hong Kong Open, which begins on Thursday. The European Tour 2017 season just wrapped up with last week’s DP World Tour Championship and now the 2018 season gets underway this week. It is a top-heavy field this week, with Rose, Garcia and Matthew Fitzpatrick the clear top three choices. We are coming off a 1-2-1 with the matchup picks at the DP World Tour Championship. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s UBS Hong Kong Open.

DP World Tour Championship Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. The Hong Kong Golf Club is a course that is short and lined with trees. The fairways are narrow, so driving accuracy will be very important and greens-in-regulation will be a key statistic to consider. Scrambling is another key statistic to look at because everyone is going to miss the fairway at one time or another. The last 13 winners of this event have all ranked in the top 12 in GIR for the week. Seven of the last eight winners have ranked in the top six in scrambling for the week.
Matthew Fitzpatrick +170 vs. Justin Rose
This is simply a price play, as I don’t understand Rose being such a big favorite. There is no doubting the talent of Rose, but this is a huge letdown spot for him after last week’s collapse on the final nine holes in Dubai. This course in Hong Kong suits Fitzpatrick well and I think he can win. I will take him at the nice price in this matchup.
Kiradech Aphibarnrat +140 vs. Tommy Fleetwood
The next two plays are simply going against Fleetwood. I can’t see anything other than a massive letdown for Fleetwood who won the Race to Dubai. Not only should he have a letdown, but he could be worn out after playing every week recently. I will take Aphibarnrat at the plus price in this matchup.
Rafael Cabrera Bello +120 vs. Tommy Fleetwood
I will go with Cabrera Bello at the plus price in this matchup. This is more of a play against Fleetwood, but Cabrera Bello is more than capable of contending this week.
David Lipsky -120 vs. Aaron Rai
This should be a good event for Lipsky who likes courses with narrow fairways. He said recently that this course in Hong Kong is one of his favorites. Lipsky finished fifth in this event a year ago and I think he will be in the mix again this week. I will lay the short price and take Lipsky in this matchup.
Jeunghun Wang -105 vs. Marcus Kinhult
I will lay the small price on Wang in this matchup. He is coming off a nice finish last week at the DP World Tour Championship and his game is definitely on the way up. Kinhult is taking a step up in competition, as he has been playing on the Challenge Tour.
