WGC-HSBC Champions Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Sheshan International played really easy last year, as Matsuyama shot 23-under par. The weather for the first three rounds this week is expected to be good but the wind is expected to blow on Sunday and make things tough. This course has four par 5’s so distance off the tee is one of the key factors to consider this week. Another factor that we are going to look at is preparation, as only one previous winner of this event has come in having had more than one week off.

John Rahm -105 vs. Jason Day

I think Rahm will rebound after last week’s disappointing finish in Spain. Rahm has the distance to dominate this course and he is ranked higher in the World Rankings than Day. I will take Rahm at the short price in this matchup.

Tommy Fleetwood +125 vs. Francesco Molinari

I know Molinari won this event in 2010 but I still think Fleetwood is the better player and has the right game for this course. It also helps that Fleetwood doesn’t want to lose his lead in the Race to Dubai after Sergio Garcia gained ground on him last week. Fleetwood has played well in China in the past with a second in the Shenzhen International and a third in Hong Kong. I am really surprised at the price and will take Fleetwood at plus money in this matchup.

Matthew Fitzpatrick +110 vs. Patrick Reed

Fitzpatrick tied for 7th in this event two years ago and tied for 16th last year. He has top 15 finishes in each of his last three events overall. Reed did well to finish in a tie for 11th last week, as he was constantly in trouble. I don’t think he gets away with all the mistakes this week. I will take Fitzpatrick at plus money in this matchup.

Ross Fisher +150 vs. Justin Rose

I am shocked at the price on this matchup, as Rose hasn’t even played recently and we know from history that players simply don’t win this event without having played in recent weeks. Rose said that he feels like he has crammed for this tournament and that is never a good recipe for success. Fisher has finished second in his last two starts and he tied for 3rd in this event in 2015 and tied for 6th last year. I will take Fisher at the nice price.
