The top three players in the latest world rankings, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth are all in the field for this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Johnson is the clear favorite at odds of +585, while Rahm is the second choice at odds of +985. We went a disappointing 2-4 with last week’s matchup picks at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, so we’ll look for a bounce back week. AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. This event is held on three courses, Pebble Beach, Monterey and Spy Glass, with all golfers competing once on each course and then the cut after 54 holes and the low 60 players and ties playing Pebble on Sunday. The courses are considered relatively short, so the three stats to consider this week are Strokes Gained: Approach, Birdie or Better % and Strokes Gained: Around the Green.
Dustin Johnson -145 vs. Rory McIlroy
Johnson is the clear favorite this week and why not? He has won this event twice and always seems to be in contention. He is the No. 1 player in the world and in fine form. I am a fan of Rory but he rarely plays in California and has actually never played this event. I will lay the small price and take Johnson in this matchup.
Chesson Hadley -105 vs. Chez Reavie
I think it will be hard for Reavie to put last week’s playoff loss behind him. I also really like Hadley, as he has finished in the top 10 twice in three starts in this event. He has four top 10 finishes already this season.
Jason Kokrak -115 vs. Shane Lowry
Kokrak always seems to play well in California and last year he recovered from a poor opening round 77 to finish 23rd. He played well in California in the CareerBuilder Challenge with a top 10 finish and he could have won if not for a bad closing two holes. I will lay the small price and take Kokrak in this matchup.
Kevin Chappell -145 vs. Bryson DeChambeau
In six of his past seven rounds, Chappell has shot 69 or better. He didn’t play great last week in Phoenix with a 31st place finish, but he could contend this week. I think DeChambeau is overrated and far more likely to miss the cut than to challenge for the win this week.
Brandon Harkins -120 vs. Graeme McDowell
Harkins is very comfortable in California, as he won the Monterey Open and he shot 65 at Pebble Beach in the Taylor Made Invitational. He grew up near Pebble Beach and always seems to play well there. McDowell hasn’t contender anywhere in a long time and will do well just to make the cut.
