How often do you see the favorite in a golf tournament listed at odds of +2250? That is the case this week for the Barracuda Championship, which begins on Thursday in Nevada. With all of the world’s best players in Ohio for the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, the Barracuda Championship gives a lot of second tier players a chance to pick up a win. J.J. Henry and Vaughn Taylor have won this event twice and they are in the field, as is defending champion Greg Chalmers, but Ben Martin is listed as the favorite at +2250.

I have no idea why Martin is listed as the favorite this week. He doesn’t rank in the Top 50 in any meaningful PGA Tour statistic. He is 194th in the latest World Golf Rankings. I am looking elsewhere.
Luke List +3050
List is tied for 6th on the PGA Tour in eagles and there is no question that making eagles is a huge bonus in Modified Stableford scoring. List is 42nd in FedExCup points and I think you can make a case he should be favored in this event.
Brandon Hagy +3050
Hagy played really well in Canada last week and he is 9th on the PGA Tour in eagles. His length should play well in Nevada and I think he has a chance to win this event at longshot odds.

Could this be the week for Schneiderjans? He has the most top ten finishes of anyone in the field this season with four.

He has three top ten finishes this season and in this field he could be in contention for the win on Sunday.
Course: Montreux Golf & Country Club is a par 72 that measures 7,472 yards. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and features a “Bear Trap” on holes 6-8. It has traditionally ranked as one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour, although it no longer gets a spot in the official rankings because the event uses the Modified Stableford scoring.

Notes: Last year it was Chalmers winning this event for his first win in his 368th PGA Tour start. He eagled the 18th hole to beat Gary Woodland by six points. This will be the sixth year that the Barracuda Championship will use the Modified Stableford scoring, which awards five points for eagles, two points for birdie, zero points for pars, minus one point for bogeys and minus three points for double bogeys and worse.
You might think that length is necessary to win this event but defending champion Chalmers told the Nevada Appeal that the altitude makes length less important. "Length is negated because of the altitude. You don't have to hit driver on all holes. The fairways are decent width. If you miss the fairway it's really nasty. This is a good test of golf. My peers love this course."
