The Wanamaker trophy is up for grabs this week when the PGA Championship gets underway live on TNT and CBS. Sadly, this is the last major of the year, man, where did the year go. For the first time since 1982, American players have a chance to sweep all four majors.
The PGA Championship is the last chance to win a major until the Masters next April. The list seems to be getting longer for the best player to have never won a major. Topping the list are Dustin Johnson and Jason Day who time after time tease us for 3 or 4 rounds, then fade on the back nine on Sunday.
If the short history at Whistling Straits is any indication, expect the winner to play more than 72 holes. Both times it was decided in a three-hole playoff. Vijay Singh won in 2004 over Justin Leonard and Chris DiMarco and in 2010, Martin Kaymer prevailed over Bubba Watson. Betting the “yes” for a playoff is a great play this week.

PGA Championship Golf Matchups at BookMaker sportsbook:
Jordan Spieth -150 vs. Dustin Johnson +130
Johnson disappoints backers on a weekly basis and can not be trusted over four rounds. Spieth excels week after week and rarely has a bad round. Spieth is the easy choice in this matchup.
Henrik Stenson -125 vs. Adam Scott +105
Time is running out on Scott and his long putter, if that even matters the way the Aussie is rolling the pill. Scott’s putting is a real concern and puts way too much pressure on other aspects of his game, forcing him to get uncomfortable when the chips are down. Stenson is a ball-striking machine and will be too much for Scott to handle.
Phil Mickelson -150 vs. Tiger Woods +130
This used to be the marquee golf matchup but has lost it’s luster in the past few years. Both players are very unpredictable, but the edge has to go to Mickelson because of his short game. Woods needs a strong finish to keep his season alive, but his pursuit of a perfect swing have ruined his chances as once again he disappoints his fans with an early exit by missing the cut and packing his bags up until next year.
Justin Thomas -120 vs. Tony Finau EV
This matchup will go a long ways in determining the Rookie of the Year honors as both players have had outstanding years. Thomas has has seven top 10’s and is the frontrunner for the award, although Finau is pleading his case with solid play. Thomas knows what’s on the line and gets the job done with a win in this matchup.
