Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship Preview, Odds and Predictions

2018-GOLF-Corales-Puntacana-Resort-Club-Odds

For those golfers who are not in the Top 64 in the latest World Golf Rankings and didn’t qualify for the WGC Match Play event, there is the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship tournament in the Dominican Republic. This will be the first year for this tournament on the PGA Tour, as it had previously been a Web.com Tour event. With no marquee players in the event, much of the attention will be on former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo who is playing this event. Let’s look at the odds and predictions for the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship that begins on Thursday.

Odds Analysis

Emiliano Grillo +800

Grillo is the highest ranked player in the field at No. 76 in the latest World Rankings. He has been playing really well of late and is the clear standout in this field and a deserving favorite.

Jim Furyk +1250

Furyk has the name value, but he has not contended for a win anywhere in a long time and this course really shouldn’t suit his game. The course is all about distance and par 5 scoring, and that is not where Furyk excels. He is all about accuracy and that is not the key stat this week. I think Furyk is overvalued at these odds.

Scott Piercy +1650

It is really hard to get too excited about any of the top favorites this week other than Grillo. Piercy rarely contends on the PGA Tour and even in this weak field it is hard to pick him to win.

Graeme McDowell +1850

McDowell has the best resume of any of the top contenders, but he hasn’t won in a long while. He has played better of late and in this weak field he could be a contender. McDowell should be able to take advantage of the par 5’s this week and that puts him into the contender category.

David Lingmerth +3550

If Grillo doesn’t win this event then almost anyone could win in this field. Lingmerth has at least won a tournament in the past couple of years so he knows how to win. I think he is a live longshot at these odds.

Trey Mullinax +3550

Mullinax is my key statistic player of the week, as he is second on the PGA Tour in driving distance. I give Mullinax a real chance to win this week at longshot odds.

Matt Every +12500

I rarely take a golfer at these type of odds, but this field is so weak that a number of huge longshots have a real chance to contend. Every is a golfer who has won on the PGA in the past and he could be in the mix this week at huge odds.

Course: The Corales course is a relatively easy course, as it played sixth-easiest on the Web.com Tour last season. The 7th hole is a par 5 that measures just 515 yards and last year it saw 20 eagles recorded on it. All four of the par 3’s are shorter than 265 yards. The course measures 7,650 yards and is a par 72. Par 5 scoring will be a key stat to consider this week along with driving distance.
