The Presidents Cup is here! The United States team is over a 2 to 1 favorite and if the International squad wants to make it a game, they have to get off to a good start on day one. The United States has dominated the matches, winning eight, tying one, with only a single loss. In the past, the biggest problem for the International team has been keeping the matches close, making this year’s day one matches that much more important.
Current Presidents Cup Odds at BookMaker Sportsbook:
United States Team -235
International Team +185
As you can see, the Americans are a heavy favorite. The International team is optimistic about their chances and Captain Nick Price loves the new rule change that he thinks benefits his team, Price said, “There will now be five four-ball and five foursome matches on Thursday and Friday, versus six and six previously. Every player on each team will still play in the Sunday’s singles matches. Another change includes that any matches that are all-square after 18 holes, will be determined as a draw, with each team receiving a half point.”
Day 1 matches - Foursomes - Odds courtesy of BookMaker sportsbook
Bubba Watson/JB Holmes -110 vs. Adam Scott/Hideki Matsuyama -110
This should be an interesting match when arguably the two longest hitters on the planet face off against two great ball-strikers. Holmes replaced an injured Jim Furyk on the American side and when Watson found out about it, the first thing he did was send Captain Jay Haas a message that said, “JB and I will be ready to rock.” It may come down to putting, but the length of the Americans will be too much. Americans win this match.
Matt Kuchar/Patrick Reed Even vs. Louis Oosthuizen/Branden Grace -120
Kuchar and Reed have played poorly in recent events and if the South African duo play like they did in the big events in 2015, the Americans will be in for a long day. The International team wins this match and squares things up in the competition.
Rickie Fowler/Jimmy Walker -155 vs. Anirban Lahiri/Thongchai Jaidee +135
This is the battle of the rookies. All players are making their first Presidents Cup appearance. Fowler and Walker did pair up in the Ryder Cup matches and had success, halving their first three matches before losing their last. Walker’s game is a concern. Lahiri and Jaidee will have the Asian fans in an uproar and pull the first real upset of the competition. Lahiri and Jaidee get the money as the International’s creep ahead by a point.
Phil Mickelson/Zach Johnson +105 vs. Jason Day/Steven Bowditch -125
Jason Day, all day, everyday! The Aussie will be too much for the Americans to overcome. Bowditch has a lot of confidence and won’t let the big stage affect his play. Mickelson and Johnson is a puzzling matchup, two opposites. Captain Jay Haas better hope that opposites attract, otherwise he will be questioned about this pairing. The Internationals surprisingly pull ahead 3-1.
Jordan Spieth/Dustin Johnson -200 vs. Danny Lee/Marc Leishman +175
Spieth wanted to be paired with the long-hitting Johnson. “We both felt that we would be a good alternate-shot team,” Spieth said. “We felt like it sets up really nicely on this course, specifically for the evens and odds. We wanted to try it.” I think Spieth will be great for Johnson’s mental game and Captain Haas may have found an unbeatable team with this pairing. The Americans win this match to cut into the International lead.
After Day 1, the Internationals take a surprisingly 3-2 lead. The Americans will have to play better and mix up a few of the pairings. The drama gets hotter as we move on to Day 2.
