Dustin Johnson ( +640 ) and fan favorite Phil Mickelson ( +1700 ) headline the betting field at this week’s FedEx St. Jude Classic. Both players are trying to get their games in tip top shape for next week’s U.S. Open.
Johnson won in Memphis in 2012 and after winning at Doral earlier this year has hit a cold spell with only two top ten finishes. Mickelson’s game is hot and cold, shooting 66 one day and 74 the next.
The Hall of Famer comes to Memphis with three top-20 finishes in his previous five starts and that just doesn’t cut it for a player that has much higher expectations.
Other notables scheduled to play include former No. 1 Luke Donald ( +3550 ), Phoenix Open winner Brooks Koepka ( +2800 ), defending champion Ben Crane ( +10250 ) and reigning FedExCup champion Billy Horschel ( +1800 ).
In the history of the FedEx St. Jude Classic, only five winners have come from outside the United States, the last was Lee Westwood in 2010 and he is not in the field this week.
TPC Southwind will host the event for the 27th consecutive year. The layout measures just over 7,200 yards and plays to a par of 70. The eleventh hole is Southwinds signature hole and it draws comparisons to the famed No. 17 at TPC Sawgrass where a short iron is required to an island green. The finishing hole is one of the most difficult par four’s on the PGA Tour and may well decide the outcome of the tournament, a two-shot swing is quite possible.

George McNeil ( +4750 ) is one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour. McNeil has teed it up 15 times in 2015 and missed just one cut. His worst finish in his last five starts is a T28. He played well at the Memorial ( T13 ) in his last start, played well at Colonial ( T5 ) two weeks ago, hell, he plays well every week and is why I encourage everyone to bet on McNeil in the weekly golf matchups.
Rookie Zac Blair ( +16050 ) is getting his feet wet this year on tour but has played well in spots with one top ten and seven other top 25’s. Blair hits the ball straight and plays well on target type layouts like TPC Southwind. The kid is not flashy but not afraid to step it up against the big boys and will churn out a top 25 finish this week in Memphis.
Camilo Villegas ( +8550 ) is having a very poor year but may be turning it around. On Monday he qualified for the U.S. Open which is a sign in the right direction. The Colombian loves playing in Memphis where he has only missed the cut one time in 11 starts. In his last five starts in Memphis he has four top 15’s. I have an inkling that Villegas will play well this week. Bet ON Villegas in the weekly golf betting matchups.
