Dustin Johnson leads by one after first round of the 144th Open Championship on ESPN

The Old Course at St. Andrews offered up some of the lowest daily scoring in the history of the Open Championship. The players took advantage of the benign conditions where 64 players broke par.

Dustin Johnson played in the morning and flat out over powered the venue by posting a 65 and holds a one stroke lead after day one at 7-under. Johnson went bogey-free with five birdies and one eagle to vault to the lead.

Jordan Spieth played in the same group as Johnson and tried to keep pace but two bogeys on the back nine derailed the young Texan. He still managed to stay close with a first round 67 at 5-under. Spieth’s quest for the third leg of the grand slam got off to a great start; he is in perfect position, two shots off the lead.

Another Johnson played well too. Zach Johnson had the best score in the afternoon wave posting a solid 66 that left him one behind the leader.

The weather forecast is nasty! Friday’s forecast is for 20-25 mph winds with a mix of rain throughout the day. St. Andrews will have the last laugh as players will be scrambling to make pars. The players that can control their ball flights will be the ones that hang in there and remain atop the leaderboard after Round 2.

Zach Johnson, Spieth, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel all are players to keep your eye on as all four players are great ball-strikers that can control their ball in any kind of weather. If the weather gets dicey, expect these players to be in the mix and contend for the Claret Jug.

Tiger Woods played in the morning, favorable conditions and still managed to shoot one of the worst rounds of his career at a major. A 76 left Woods 11 strokes behind Johnson and searching for answers. The Woods era is over!
