Farmers Insurance Open Matchup Odds and Picks

Farmers-Insurance-Open

The spotlight will be on Tiger Woods this week, as he makes his return to the PGA Tour in the Farmers Insurance Open. Yes, we saw Tiger return in the Hero World Challenge, but this will be his first PGA Tour event since his last back surgery. Tiger is getting some attention in the betting odds, but he is still just the seventh choice in the betting odds. We went 4-2 with last week’s matchup picks at the CareerBuilder Challenge. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Farmers Insurance Open Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. The Torrey Pines South Course is long at 7,698 yards and players who make the cut will play it three times. The course is also tough, as it was the most difficult par 72 two years ago. Length off the tee is huge this week, as there are six par 4’s of 450 yards or more and three par 5’s that measure 570 yards or more.

Gary Woodland -124 vs. Brandt Snedeker

Woodland is one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour and he has made the cut in all eight of his previous tries in this event. He has top 20 finishes in three of his last four at Torrey Pines. Snedeker did win this event in the past, two years ago, but usually shorter hitters struggle at Torrey Pines and Snedeker was 165th on the PGA Tour in driving last season. I think Woodland has a big advantage in this matchup, so I will lay the small price.

Tony Finau +120 vs. Charles Howell III

I am really surprised Finau is listed as the underdog in this matchup. Finau bombs it off the tee, as he tied for 10th in driving distance last year on the PGA Tour. He has three top 25 finishes in this event since 2015 with a tie for 4th. Howell III has played well in this event, but I like Finau’s distance advantage in this matchup and we get Finau at plus money.

Grayson Murray -188 vs. Si Woo Kim

This is one of our key stat matchups for the week. Murray was 12th on the PGA Tour in driving distance last season. Kim has played better this season than he did a year ago, but he still is just as likely to miss the cut as to play well. I will lay the price and take Murray.

Ollie Schniederjans +136 vs. Phil Mickelson

Why is Phil such a big favorite in this matchup? He hasn’t shown he has the ability to contend and Ollie is one of the longer hitters on the Tour. He tied for 37th in driving distance last season. I will take Ollie in this matchup at plus money.
